Trad Band With a Difference

‘The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock’ who play Nenagh Arts Centre on this Saturday, March 8th, take their name from a poem about a haunted canal lock in Dublin.

The band matches Irish folk and traditional sounds with more modern experimental rock sounds. With the release of their album ‘The Brutal Here and Now’ they have looked to refine their craft, creating melodic folk rock with a dark, modern feel. They veer away from their peers in tracing a line from the Irish 60’s folk revival through progressive, kraut and post rock.

Lyrically springing from English and Irish folk song; the compositions deal with complex themes of personal and national identity, Irish history, mythology, revolution and the cynical cyclical nature of greed and power. Live they are a powerful five-piece, overlaying intricate folk melodies with swirling squalls of feedback, delay and soaring three-part harmonies.

The UK Guardian described their album as ‘a delight’ and The Irish Times said it was ‘brazen, blazing and brilliant’, while Hot Press stated that it was ‘utterly spell-binding’.

The concert takes place on Saturday 8th March at 9pm. Support is Pauric O’Meara. Admission at a special price of four for €30 or are €10 each. Online booking at www.nenagharts.com
