FBD INSURANCE TIPPERARY CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

Through late spring and early summer prospects looked desolate and bleak on the 2020 GAA landscape, but the horizon gradually drew nearer and clearer as a pathway had been signalled for the resumption of games. In the interests of safety, tough decisions had to be made with the hope that the FBD Insurance Tipperary club championships could be completed within the timeframe allotted. No one in their wildest dreams could have imagined championships of such excitement coming from where we were back in the months of May and June.

The culmination of the senior hurling championship for the Dan Breen Cup transcended all that had gone before as it exploded into the most wonderful spectacle on the Field of Legends last Sunday, where two sets of warriors, donning the jerseys of Kiladangan and Loughmore-Castleiney, battled for over eighty minutes in one of the finest county finals of recent times.

On a supreme sod, under a cloudless sky, hurling immortals, like Tom Semple himself, looking down from above would certainly have rejoiced and given their seal of approval at the exhibition that unfolded beneath them from 2pm. With referee Michael Kennedy contributing in no small measure to the day's affairs with his overseeing of events, the action was end to end played in a wonderful spirit where both sides went out with the sole purpose of victory on their minds. And for those fortunate enough to be there, together with those watching from home, we could only marvel at the array of sublime scores taken by both sides.

Ultimately, however, it was, as we know by now, to be decided in the most dramatic of fashions. If someone wrote the script beforehand, they wouldn't have been believed. Loughmore, in front by one, with what looked like only seconds remaining, following a converted sixty five by John McGrath, had their pocket picked with the last throw of the Kiladangan dice as Bryan McLoughney netted to seal a first ever title for his side in what was an epic finish to an epic contest.

Such is the beauty and majesty of our ancient game, Cú Chulainn would certainly have been envious by some of the exploits on show from two wonderfully coached and managed sides.

Congratulations to Kiladangan, who avenged recent county final defeats and can now celebrate at the top table in what will be a year and season to remember for their parish for generations to come. Commiserations to a superb Loughmore-Castleiney panel who contributed so much to this classic and were so close to making it title number four, but alas, it was not to be.

On a supreme day for Kiladangan, congratulations also to captain Paul Flynn on receiving the man of the match award following his display in which he scored 0-7 from play.

The FBD Insurance Seamus Ó Riain Final was a humdinger too where hurling was again the winner as Mullinahone eventually saw off a stiff Lorrha-Dorrha challenge by 4-18 to 2-19 played in splendid conditions in Semple Stadium last Saturday. With Eoin Kelly in sublime form his leadership and experience in attack for Mullinahone proved crucial as his 2-5 helped secure a memorable win for the south club. The action was top rate throughout with plenty of goals ensuring a nail-biting climax to this game as well. Congratulations to man of the match who was Sean Curran (Mullinahone).

Turning attention to the FBD Insurance football championships, congratulations to Rockwell Rovers who return to the top tier following their win over Grangemockler-Ballyneale in the intermediate football final.

Finally, for now, in FBD Insurance senior football relegation final Ardfinnan survive after their win over Galtee Rovers/St. Pecaun, commiserations to the Galtee on their defeat.

Coming up this weekend the FBD Insurance Senior Football Final is the main event as Loughmore-Castleiney regroup to face reigning holders Clonmel Commercials in the decider which goes ahead in Semple Stadium on Sunday next at 4:30pm. Despite the success for both clubs in recent times, 1994 was the last occasion they met in the final with Commercials taking the honours that day. Loughmore's last success came in 2016 when they defeated Moyle Rovers by 3 points in a replay. In the roll of honour table Clonmel Commercials have 18 county titles to 14 for Loughmore-Castleiney.

The FBD Insurance Intermediate Hurling Final will also be played in Semple Stadium on Sunday next where throw-in is at 1pm. It will be a mid derby with Moyne-Templetuohy and Gortnahoe-Glengoole squaring up to each other following their recent semi-final victories.

The remaining fixture this weekend is the FBD Insurance Intermediate Hurling relegation final between Galtee Rovers/St. Pecaun and Moyle Rovers which goes ahead in New Inn on Saturday at 2pm.

All knockout fixtures include extra time and finish on the day, and we send best wishes to all clubs in action this weekend.

All the relevant regulations covering the rules regarding finish on the day have been sent to club secretaries by CCC secretary Tom Maher. Club secretaries must inform team managements of the regulations so they can familiarise themselves with what will happen in the event of a game going to finish on the day.
