ELECTRIC IRELAND MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Tipperary will play Limerick in the Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling championship semi-final on Wednesday June 26 at Semple Stadium, Thurles with a 7.30pm throw in. The other semi-final between Cork and Waterford will be played in Pairc Ui Rinn on the same night. There have been 48 previous championship meetings between Tipperary and Limerick at minor level. Tipperary lead the way with 39 wins to Limerick’s 8 and there was one draw in 2000. Limerick’s last win over Tipperary was at Bruff in 2005 on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-6 while Tipp’s last win over Limerick was at the Gaelic Grounds in 2009 on a scoreline of 1-21 to 0-11. We wish the players and management team all the best for what will be a challenging encounter.
TIPPERARY V GALWAY ALL IRELAND SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Tipperary have been drawn to play Galway in the All Ireland senior football championship round 1 qualifiers. The game will take place in Pearse Stadium, Salthill on Saturday June 29 at 7pm. Extra time will be played in the event of a draw. Tipperary and Galway have met twice previously in the All Ireland Senior Football championship with Tipperary winning on both occasions. The 1900 home final, played in 1902, saw Tipp win by 2-17 to 0-1 and the 1902 semi-final, played in 1904, resulted in a Tipp win by 2-4 to 0-4. So a 109 year gap will be bridged when the teams meet later this month in Salthill.
ALL IRELAND SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW
The draw for Phase 2 of the All Ireland senior hurling qualified draw will take place next Monday morning, June 24 on RTE Radio 1’s Morning Ireland programme just after the 8.30am news. Tipperary can be drawn against either Laois or the losers of this weekend’s Leinster semi-final between Dublin and Kilkenny. The losers of the Munster semi-final between Cork and Clare will also be in the draw but cannot be drawn against Tipperary.
COUNTY AND DIVISIONAL SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The headline news from the 7 round 1 games of the county senior hurling championship is that there will be new county senior hurling champions following Nenagh Eire Og’s 3 point victory over reigning champions Thurles Sarsfields on Sunday evening at the Ragg. In the other games there were wins for Holycross Ballycahill, JK Brackens, Kilruane MacDonaghs, Portroe, Roscrea and Templederry Kenyons. The round 1 game between Burgess and Carrick Davins was postponed.
The senior hurling hcampionhsip finalists in all 4 divisions are known after last weekend’s semi-finals. In the North, reigning North, County and Munster Intermediate hurling champions, Silvermines, qualified for their first senior final since 1975. They will play Kildangan in the final. In the Mid Division, there’s a more familiar look to the final pairing of Drom and Inch and Loughmore Castleiney. Recent final rivalries will also be renewed in the West between Clonoulty Rossmore and Eire Og Annacarty Donohill. In the South Killenaule will play Carrick Swan in the final.
The county championship round 1 winners and the 8 defeated divisional semi-finalists went into the hat for the round 2 draw on Sunday night resulting in the following pairings: Mullinahone v Nenagh Eire Og; Borris-Ileigh v JK Brackens; Cappawhite v Carrick Davins or Burgess; Templederry Kenyons v Ballingarry; Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams v Roscrea; Moycarkey Borris v Portroe; Upperchurch Drombane v Holycross Ballycahill and Toomevara v Kilruane MacDonaghs. SEAMUS O RIAIN CUP DRAW
The draw for the Seamus O Riain Cup quarter finals was also made on Sunday night resulting in the following pairings: Borrisokane v Golden Kilfeacle; Cashel King Cormacs v Burgess or Carrick Davins; Thurles Sarsfields v Boherlahan Dualla; Moneygall v Lorrha and Dorrha. The games will be played over the next 2 weekends – again see local papers and Tipperary GAA website, www.tipperary.gaa.ie, for fixture details. The losers will play down to decide which team is relegated this year. All 8 teams will be in Roinn 2 of next year’s county championship which means they must win their group within Roinn 2 or win their divisional title to have a chance to win the county senior hurling title in 2014.
THE COMPETIVENESS GAP
There is clearly a competitiveness gap between many of our senior hurling teams if the results of the round 1 games can be used as a benchmark. In the 7 games played last weekend, the average winning margin was 13 points with the range of margins going from 3 points in two games to victories of 7, 13, 14, 23 and 28 in the other 5 games. The Intermediate championship games played at the weekend resulted in 1 draw and victories of 8, 16 and 21 points or an average margin of just over 11 points.
PHILLY BUTLER RETIREMENT
Tipperary County Board would like to wish recently retired Semple Stadium caretaker, Philly Butler, a happy and healthy retirement and to thank him for all his good work over the years maintaining the pitch and Stadium and his assistance to county teams training and playing in the Stadium.

Tipperary County Board would like to extend its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late John Hogan and the Burgess GAA club on the recent tragic death of John at the age of 24. ELVERYS GAA / GPA YOUTH CAMPS
Register for our very own GAA/GPA Elverys Youth Camp! The Gaelic Athletic Association(GAA) and Gaelic Players Association (GPA) are offering boys between 13 to 15 years of age, the chance to learn the skills of Gaelic Football and Hurling from their GAA heroes, in top venues across the country over a two week period, from June 24-28 and July 1-5. This is the latest venture between the GAA and the players’ body and will see youths of all playing ability get an insight into the life of an inter-county player in an action packed week. Some of the areas which will be covered include conditioning games, skills development, mental preparation, sports nutrition and athletic development. Each camp will be organised and supervised by a leading GAA player in their respective county and the cost of online booking is €55. All participants will receive a limited edition Elverys Sports pack, while there will also be an exciting competition with the chance to win a Lenovo laptop in each camp. Thanks are due to all those who supported and helped organise the fundraising event at the Clonmel Races last Friday night. While the inclement weather did not help, there was a fine attendance and the regular and new punters alike enjoyed a fine evening’s racing, entertainment and fun.
