MUNSTER SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

It was a heartbreak finish to the Munster Senior Football Championship Semi-Final for Tipperary last Saturday evening, as Cork's last raid on the Premier goal proved crucial and saw them edge over the line on a 1-10 to 1-09 score-line. Liam Kearns' side were good value for their half time lead in a rather subdued first half. The most worrying event of that first half was an ankle injury sustained by All Star forward Michael Quinlivan (Clonmel Commercials) who had to be stretchered off.

Early second half points from man of the match Conor Sweeney (Ballyporeen) pushed Tipp further ahead before Cork made inroads into Tipp's lead. Coming down the home stretch with excitement and intensity rising the Tipperary faithful lifted the rafters when Sweeney goaled in the sixty ninth minute. However, that joy was short lived as Cork responded immediately to claim victory much to Tipperary's disappointment.

Commiserations to the team who started with four full championship debutants on the day, Ciarán Kenrick (Moyle Rovers), Shane O'Connell (Golden Kilfeacle), Liam Boland (Moyle Rovers) and Diarmuid Foley (Moyle Rovers). They must wait now for the qualifier draw to find out who their next opponents will be.

Congratulations to Conor Sweeney on being selected as Man of the Match in Páirc Uí Rinn.

Best wishes to the growing number on the injury list in the camp for speedy recoveries as all players are crucial to the side in forthcoming games.

Best wishes to Johnny Ryan (Boherlahan-Dualla) as he takes charge of the Leinster Hurling Championship Semi-Final between Galway and Offaly in Portlaoise next Sunday.

CELTIC CHALLENGE

It was quarter-final stage in the various divisions in the Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge last Saturday and it proved to be very profitable for both Tipperary teams in action as they made it through too their respective semi-finals.

In Celtic Challenge Division 1 - Corn Michael Hogan Quarter-Final South Tipperary defeated Kilkenny Amber 1-16 to 2-12 to make it through by the skin of their teeth. The South Tipperary goal came from Stephen Grogan (Cahir) while Eoghan Connolly (Cashel King Cormacs) was the South Tipperary recipient of the Best and Fairest award.

This Thursday, June 15th, South Tipperary play Kilkenny Black in the semi-final in Carriganore, Waterford 7pm and we send best wishes to the team and hope they can go all the way to the final.

Elsewhere in Celtic Challenge in Division 2 - Corn John Scott Quarter-Final North/Mid Tipperary defeated South/East Clare 1-22 to 0-12 on their way to securing a semi-final berth. In what was a fantastic team performance the Mid/North Tipp side lead at half time 1-10 to 0-6 despite playing against a strong wind with the goal coming from Stephen Kirwan (Burgess).

Again we also send best wishes to the team in the semi-final where they will meet North Cork next Saturday, June 17th, with time and venue to be confirmed. Like their South colleagues we hope they too can make it to the final.

NEW COUNTY CLUBS DRAW

The first draw in the new Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw took place last Friday night in Glasheen's Holycross with many thanks to all who were in attendance for the start of the new draw season.

Congratulations to the main winners on the night, both from the Mid Division, with the star prize of a Renault Kadjar or €30,000 going to James Carey whose ticket was sold by the Upperchurch-Drombane GAA Club and second prize of a Skoda Octavia or €15,000 going to Una Ferncombe and Una's ticket was sold by Boherlahan-Dualla GAA club.

COUNTY LONG PUCK

The County Long Puck took place at Fairy Mount Farm, on the site of Bike Park Ireland in Knockshegowna last Saturday. Thanks a million to Graham and all his staff at Bike Park Ireland for hosting our Annual County Poc Fada. There were nine participants in total (4 Senior and 5 U16). Congratulations to the winner of the Senior Poc Fada who was Mike Flannery (Newport) and also to the U16 winner Ryan Renehan (Cappawhite GAA Club). Big thank you also to Knockshegowna GAA for providing Tipperary Coaching and Games with markers and helpers on the day as without them it would not be possible to run the day.

The two winners go on to the Burren, Clare, to take part in Munster final on Saturday 24th June so best of luck to our two contestants in the Munster Final.

LORY MEAGHER CUP

Tipperary had considerable interest in last Saturday’s Lory Meagher Cup final with Donnacha Kennedy from the Drom and Inch club captaining Warwickshire to a six-point victory over Croke Park debutants Leitrim. It was Donnacha’s second Lory Meagher Cup medal having won previously with the Exiles in 2013.

The team also included Ian Dwyer from Gortnahoe-Glengoole who along with Donnacha scored a point each of the Exiles’ 0-17 total. Killenaule’s Joe Meagher also made a cameo appearance for the Exiles.

Among the Leitrim selectors was Paddy O’Connor from Moneygall who has devoted much of his life in Co. Leitrim to the promotion of hurling.

HANDBALL

In Feile Handball last weekend Tipp Boys and Girls won silver following their matches at opposite sides of the country. In the John West Féile na nGael 60x30 Division 1 championships Ballina lost out to Kilfane from Kilkenny in Castlebridge to finish a fantastic day of 60x30 Handball. The Ballina team of Evan Carey, Brian Bourke, Kian Donnelly and Adam Fogarty played some great handball throughout and in the final just lost out to a very strong Kilkenny team.

Meanwhile, at St. Josephs Wexford, Lahorna girls played in the 40x20 division 1 championship where they played in a group of six teams. They finished in second place and the team was Leanne Gould, Hannah Grace, Christine Percy, Anna Mulcahy and Aine Spain.

Lahorna also entered a boys' team and they played 60x30 in Castlebridge against Taghmon, Ballina and Kilfane. Lahorna finished in third place and the team was made up by Rory Grace, Eoin Carroll, Jack Mulcahy, Ryan Gillick and Sean Hayes.

1887 ALL-IRELAND FINAL RE-ENACTMENT

Time is drawing nearer for the re-enactment of the first ever All-Ireland hurling final (1887) which will take place in Thurles on Saturday, July 1st, as part of Thurles Sportsfest. The local organising committee have been in contact with a number of descendants of the players and officials of that momentous day. These descendants will take part in the re-enactment to ensure that is as true to its origin as it can be and for their part Meelick (Galway) are having similar success on their side.
