ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE

Tipperary came up just short in their Allianz Hurling League match against Cork last Saturday evening with the home side taking both points on offer on a 2-24 to 1-25 result before an attendance of 9,812. Tipperary’s goal came courtesy of a late second half penalty from Brian Hogan (Lorrha-Dorrha) as Tipp worked hard to gain parity at least.

Best wishes to John O’Dwyer (Killenaule) for a speedy recovery following a heavy knock in added time.

Next up on Sunday week, February 16th, Tipperary are away again as they take on Galway in round 3 in Pearse Stadium with a 2pm start.

ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Tipperary footballers had a one-point win, 0-11 to 1-7, in their Allianz Division 3 round 2 tie with Louth on Sunday last. They now have three points after two games and head north on Sunday next, February 9th to take on Derry in Celtic Park where throw-in will be at 1pm. Derry were defeated by Down last weekend and sit mid-table behind Tipperary on one point following their first round draw at home against Leitrim.

Tipperary and Derry met a championship qualifier in 2016 with Tipperary shading a magnificent contest by a single point on a 1-21 to 2-17 score-line, Kevin O’Halloran (Portroe) the Tipp goal scorer that day.

We send best wishes to the team on Sunday and to all Tipperary supporters making the journey.

The referee will be Jerome Henry (Maigh Eo).

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL

Cork proved too strong as they claimed victory in the Lidl Senior National Football League round 2 tie against Tipperary last Sunday on a 2-11 to 1-6 score-line. Caitlin Kennedy was the Tipperary goal scorer.

Round 3 is against Westmeath in Templetuohy this Sunday, February 9th, with throw in at 1pm. Best wishes to the team on Sunday and all support is most welcome.

CAMOGIE

Though confusion over the final score lingered for twenty-four hours or so, the Tipperary senior camogie team got their Littlewoods Ireland National League up and running with a one point win over Limerick in LIT Gaelic Grounds last Sunday, with the final score reading 0-10 to 1-6 in Tipperary’s favour.

REFEREES

Best wishes to Tipperary referees on duty in the Allianz Football League this weekend. On Sunday Derek O’Mahoney (Ardfinnan) oversees the meeting of Roscommon and Clare in Division 2 in Dr. Hyde Park. While in Division 4, Seán Lonergan (Moyle Rovers) keeps an eye on proceedings between Carlow and Limerick in Netwatch Cullen Park.

ALL-IRELAND SCÓR NA nÓG FINALS

All Ireland Glory for Newcastle Rince Foirne

The INEC Theatre in Killarney was once again the venue for the All Ireland Finals of Scór na nÓg on Saturday last February 1st. It proved to be a happy return to this splendid venue for the dancers from Newcastle who took first place in Ireland in the Rince Foirne Competition. This competition had eluded Newcastle for the past number of years and the announcement of their win was greeted with magnificent scenes of delight and excitement in the auditorium. The girl’s performance was excellent as they thrilled the audience with their display. Kathy McGrath, their dance teacher has worked tirelessly with this group and the huge Tipperary contingent in the audience rose to greet the announcement with tumultuous applause.

Well done and comghairdeas le Ciara, Emma, Ellie, Orlaith, Sarah, Niamh, Amy agus Abbie agus dar ndóigh Kath. Ta éacht déanta agaibh. The Newcastle dancers are pictured right with John Horan, Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.

Our other fine Munster finalists Cailín Creamer (Portroe) – Amhranaíocht Aonair, Canice Ryan (Seán Treacy’s) –Aithriseoireacht and Borris-Ieigh’s wonderful novelty act comprising of Niamh, Harry, Nicole, Liam, Kaylyn, Conchúr, Emily agus Daniel took to the stage in their various disciplines and gave outstanding and confident displays. However, victory was not to be theirs, but they know they have represented club, county and province with great accomplishment. Their mentors, families and numerous supporters are justifiably proud of them and the experience of taking part at national level will no doubt inspire them further to continue to take part in Scór.

Tipperary County and Provincial Coiste Scór members were there to lend encouragement and support and the hundreds of supporters who travelled from the Premier County was truly remarkable and heartening. Ní neart go cur le chéile.

The National Chairperson of Coiste Scór in his address to the audience urged and encouraged all GAA clubs and County Boards to afford Scór prominence and centre stage. The promotion of Scór needs to be an integral part of all GAA activities and young people must be recruited to promote Scór at all levels. He stressed the importance of pride in our communities and inclusiveness in our clubs. ‘Our GAA –Where we all belong’ has no finer manifestation than within Scór. No need to look further than the Borris-Ileigh Leiriú to witness that truth. Maith sibh go léir, Scor Abú.

Scór Sinsear

Following on from Scór na nÓg success we hope to emulate that experience, so we are calling on all clubs to look to the date of March 7th in Newport and take part in this excellent competition.

Scór na bPáistí Parish finals are already under way and we wish all those taking part Ádh mhór. Bain sult is spraoi as agus bígí ag rince is ag canadh is ag aisteoireacht is ag seinm ceoil. Saturday 5th April is your spriocdáta.

ELECTRIC IRELAND FITZGIBBON & SIGERSON CUPS

The intensity is building now in the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup which focuses in on this weekend’s semi-final action.

The results of last week’s quarter finals are as follows;
Mary Immaculate College Limerick 2-21 University of Limerick 1-21 (aet)
University College Cork 1-20 University College Dublin 2-12
IT Carlow 5-20 N.U.I. Galway 0-28 (aet)
DCU Dóchas Éireann 1-23 Waterford Institute of Technology 2-14

Extra-time was required in the Mary I win over UL in what was a fascinating match. 2-15 to 1-18 at the end of normal time, UL pushed ahead in the first period of extra-time and led 1-21 to 2-16 at the break. Not to be outdone Mary I kicked on in the second period to seal a hard-earned victory over their neighbours.

Tipperary players were to the fore for both sides with Cathal Bourke (Clonoulty-Rossmore) shooting 0-11 (0-10f) and Andy Ormond (JK Brackens) 1-2 from play, accounting for most of the scores for Mary I. They were ably assisted by Darragh Peters and Craig Morgan (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Ray McCormack (Borris-Ileigh) and Eanna McBride (JK Brackens). For UL, here again, four Tipperary players scored 0-20 with Cain Darcy (Kilruane MacDonaghs) with 0-16 (0-13f) the ace marksman again, while Jake Morris (Nenagh Éire Óg) 0-2, and Bryan O’Mara (Holycross-Ballycahill) and Padraic Campion (Drom & Inch) contributed 0-1 apiece. Barry Hogan (Kiladangan) was in goal, Brian McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) was in the back line with O’Mara and Campion, while upfront Jack Shelly (Mullinahone) joined Darcy and Morris.

Reigning holders UCC made it comfortably through to the semi-finals in their win over UCD. Mark Kehoe (Kilsheelan-Kilcash) scored 0-2 for UCC and was once again joined by Killian O’Dwyer (Killenaule) and Paddy Cadell (JK Brackens) on the field of play. Rory and Michael Purcell (Thurles Sarsfields) again lined out for UCD with Rory on the scoresheet with 0-3 from play. Niall Heffernan (Golden-Kilfeacle) and Diarmuid Ryan (Clonakenny) both came on in the second half.

There was high drama in the fixture between IT Carlow and NUIG with extra-time required to separate the sides. In the end, DJ Careys side emerged victorious with Jerry Kelly (Borris-Ileigh) scoring 1-1 of his sides tally, while Fergal Hayes (Kiladangan) lined out at corner back.

Finally, in the game between DCU and WIT, there is no Tipperary representation with DCU. Tom Hayes (Moycarkey-Borris) and Kevin Hassett (Drom & Inch) were again in the inside backline for WIT.

So, the semi-final pairings for this weekend at Dublin City University Sportsgrounds are as follows; Mary Immaculate College Limerick v IT Carlow at 2pm and DCU Dóchas Éireann v University College Cork at 4pm with both games broadcast on gaa.ie/GAANow

The Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup Final took place last week with DCU lifting the cup after a 0-14 to 0-7 defeat of IT Carlow. There was at least one Tipperary connection on the winning side as corner back Dan Corcoran (Geraldines, Louth), has strong links with Two-Mile-Borris through his father David a native of the village, who was also a member of the Moycarkey-Borris GAA club in his time. DCU of course are managed by Paddy Christie, a key member of David Power’s Tipperary senior football management team. Congratulations to Dan, Paddy and his team.
