SENIOR HURLING COUNTY FINAL

The showpiece event across the county this coming weekend is undoubtedly the Tipperary Water County Senior Hurling Championship Final between Borris-Ileigh and Thurles Sarsfields in Semple Stadium on Sunday next, October 8th at 3:30pm. It promises to be a wonderful occasion and will be sure to bring the crowds flocking to the famous venue to witness what should be an intriguing battle, one not witnessed between the sides since they last met at this stage back in 1955.

Defending champions Thurles Sarsfields are no strangers to the big occasion as they look to complete a four in a row of Dan Breen success. Borris-Ileigh on the other hand will be looking to bridge a gap to 1986 since they last lifted the famous trophy.

Previous meetings between the sides at county final stage are scarce with only two meetings dating back to the early 1950's with Thurles Sarsfields winning both starting with 14/9/1952 Thurles Sarsfields 5-6 Borris-Ileigh 1-8 and on 2/10/1955 Thurles Sarsfields 4-10 Borris-Ileigh 0-6.

The Thurles Sarsfields captains for their Tipperary county title wins to date are - 1887 Denis Maher; 1904/1906/1907/1908/1909 &1911 Tom Semple; 1929 Jack Stapleton; 1935 /1936/1938/1939 &1942 Jim Lanigan; 1945 &1946 John Maher; 1946 Ger Cornally; 1952 Tommy Doyle; 1955 &1956 Mickey Byrne; 1957 Larry Keane; 1958 &1959 Tony Wall; 1961 Martin Maher; 1962 Mick McElgunn; 1963 Bobby Mockler; 1965 Patsy Dorney; 1964 &1974 Jimmy Doyle; 2005 Ger O’Grady; 2009 Johnny Enright; 2010 Patrick Mc Cormack; 2012, 2015, 2016 Padraic Maher and 2014 Pa Bourke.

In comparison the Borris-Ileigh captains for their Tipperary county title wins to date are - 1949 & 1950 Sean Kenny; 1953 Tim Ryan; 1981 Timmy Stapleton; 1983 Francis Spillane and 1986 Michael Ryan.

The Dan Breen Cup was first presented in 1931 with Martin Kennedy (Toomevara) the first winning captain. Moyne-Templetuohy was the last club to lift the old trophy in 1971.

A new version materialised in 1972 where Roscrea captained by Jackie Hannon collected the cup having defeated Borris-Ileigh in what would be the late Liam Devaney's last county final. Incidentally the minor game between Moycarkey-Borris and Kilruane MacDonaghs was postponed on that day. The second cup was stood down after the 2005 final and mark 3 of Dan Breen Cup was presented in 2006 to Tommy Dunne (Toomevara).

Best wishes to Fergal Horgan (Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams) who will referee this year's final. Fergal is the fourth Tipperary referee to do so in the same year as refereeing the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final, the previous being Phil Purcell 1947, John Moloney 1974 and Willie Barrett 2000.

Other Tipperary All-Ireland final referees who unfortunately didn't get to ref the county final the same year for one reason or another were - JJ Callanan 1940, Bill O'Donnell 1941, Bob Stakelum 1955, George Ryan 1979 &1985, Willie Barrett 1994 and Seamus Roche 2005.

Best wishes also to Fergal's officials on Sunday who will be standby referee - John McCormack, linesman - Phil Ryan, fourth official - Padraig Skeffington and umpires - Paul Ryan, John Ryan, Sean Bradshaw and Mickey Butler.

SEAMUS Ó RIAIN CUP

The Tipperary Water Seamus Ó Riain Cup Final between Roscrea and Toomevara gets the day's proceedings under way in Semple Stadium next Sunday at 1:15pm. Both sides with illustrious history will be looking to cap off a return to the top tier with added silverware.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING COUNTY FINAL

The Tipperary Water County Intermediate Hurling Championship Final takes place this Saturday October 7th, in Golden at 4pm and will see Gortnahoe-Glengoole and St. Mary's Clonmel meet in a hugely awaited and anticipated match where the stakes couldn't be any higher. St. Mary's with two county minor titles in a row behind them are making tremendous strides and will be eager to gain a place in the senior ranks. Likewise too for Gortnahoe-Glengoole who have been there or thereabouts for the past number of years. In trouble earlier in the season, they turned their fortunes around and came through as divisional winners as they took look to make it to the senior grade.

Best wishes to referee Philip Kelly (Ballinahinch) and his officials; standby referee - Michael Murphy, linesman - Peter Carroll, fourth official - Jim Lees and umpires - Michael Ryan, Pat O'Mahony, Thomas Kennedy and Tim McCormack.

The Tipperary Water County Intermediate Hurling Relegation last play-off match between Lattin-Cullen Gaels and Boherlahan-Dualla will also be decided this Saturday, October 7th, in Leahy Park, Cashel, where throw-in will be at 2pm. A draw will suffice for Boherlahan-Dualla so Lattin-Cullen Gaels know a win will be needed to stay up.

MINOR HURLING COUNTY FINALS

Two contrasting games took place in the semi-finals of the Tipperary Water Minor 'A' Hurling Championship last weekend with Moycarkey-Borris claiming victory over Moyle Rovers 4-18 to 1-13 in Golden whereas extra-time was required in Templemore following a Roscrea second half comeback to inflict heartbreak on Cashel King Cormacs, with Roscrea winning 3-21 to 3-19.

This sets up the first final pairing between Roscrea and Moycarkey-Borris since 1983. It took two attempts to separate the sides in Cashel that year as the first match ended all square, Moycarkey-Borris 3-3 Roscrea 2-6. Two weeks later Moycarkey claimed the title with a 2-5 to 1-5 win after a thriller of a replay. Previously Moycarkey stopped the Roscrea bid for 3 in a row winning the 1968 final. Outside of that the sides met on one other occasion in the 2003 semi-final with the Mid men prevailing again on their way to county title number four. Moycarkey would later win the 'B' Co. Final in 2007.

Roscrea on the other hand dominated the sixties winning 6 in a row from 1958 to 1963 inclusive and then in '66 and '67 before Moycarkey ended their three in a row bid in '68 as mentioned earlier. Their last success was in 1984 where they made amends for losing the '83 final.

All roads lead to Templemore, this Saturday afternoon October 7th, for the latest instalment of this rivalry with throw in at 3pm.

Separately in the Tipperary Water Minor 'B' Hurling Championship Moyne-Templetuohy/Thurles Gaels defeated Anner Gaels 4-13 to 1-8 to clinch their place in the county final, making it a unique double for the combo as they have also progressed to the football equivalent. The other semi-final saw Borrisokane defeat Clonoulty-Rossmore 4-18 to 0-11to make it through to Saturday's final and with a novel pairing it will be hard to call and is one sure to draw large crowd to Dolla where the throw in is at 1:30pm..

CLUB FOOTBALL

Two fascinating semi-finals in the Tipperary Water County Senior Football Championship last weekend provided plenty of commentary across the county as the intensity raised in the penultimate round. Clonmel Commercials gained revenge on last year's defeat by knocking out reigning champions Loughmore-Castleiney 1-9 to 1-6 while Killenaule needed extra time to eventually see off Moyle Rovers 2-16 to 1-18 in an exciting encounter.

In the remaining quarter-final played last week, Clonmel Commercials had a narrow one point win over Arravale Rovers 0-10 to 0-9 to reach the semi-final.

This sets up Killenaule and Clonmel Commercials for the Tipperary Water County Senior Football Championship Final in Semple Stadium on Sunday week, October 15th, an occasion not to be missed.

Round 1 of the Tipperary Water County Senior Football Relegation also went ahead last weekend with Drom and Inch having one point to spare over Cahir 1-12 to 0-14 while Ardfinnan easily accounted for Fethard 1-12 to 0-4. Round 2 is on Saturday next October 7th where both games throw in at 1:30pm and will see Ardfinnan play Drom-Inch in Sean Treacy Park and Cahir take on Fethard in Monroe.

Moving to the Tipperary Water County Intermediate Football Championship Quarter-Finals, Kiladangan narrowly edged out Rockwell Rovers 1-10 to 1-9 and likewise Moycarkey-Borris over Fr. Sheehy's as the 'Borris men won 0-11 to 0-10.  Elsewhere, Clonoulty-Rossmore saw off Borrisokane 0-9 to 0-6 and Clonmel Óg also had the measure of Moyne-Templetuohy in a 1-10 to 0-8 victory.

All this means that the pairings for both semi-finals on Sunday next October 8th at 12noon read as follows; Moycarkey-Borris meet Clonmel Óg in New Inn and Clonoulty-Rossmore play Kiladangan in The Ragg.

The Tipperary Water County Minor 'A' Football Championship Final will be decided when Galtee /Golden and Moyle Rovers meet on Sunday week, October 15th.

Meanwhile in the Tipperary Water County Junior 'A' Football Championship Quarter-Finals last weekend Sean Treacys defeated Portroe 1-13 to 0-9, Ballylooby-Castlegrace accounted for Gortnahoe-Glengoole 2-13 to 0-4 while Loughmore-Castleiney had the better of Ballingarry winning 4-7 to 2-9 and Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams defeated Burgess 0-18 to 1-10.

In the semi-finals, Loughmore-Castleiney take on Ballylooby-Castlegrace in Pairc Coicam, Dundrum this Saturday, October 7th at 1:30pm while Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams meet Sean Treacys on Sunday next, October 8th in Clonoulty with a 6pm start.
