ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE
In mixed weather conditions Tipperary and Waterford provided plenty of drama for the 6,411 in attendance at the Allianz Hurling League round 5 clash in Semple Stadium on Sunday last, with the Premier side claiming both points on offer on a 0-24 to 2-16 score-line.
Congratulations to Dillon Quirke (Clonoulty-Rossmore) right, on receiving the Man of the Match award on a very impressive debut and also to Brian McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) as he made his first start alongside brothers Noel and John.
That win tees things up nicely for Tipperary as they head to Pearse Stadium to play Galway in their rescheduled Round 3 tie on Sunday next, March 8th where throw-in is at 2pm.
As mentioned ahead of the postponed tie, there have been 72 previous league meetings between the sides and Tipperary lead with 46 wins to Galway's 20 and 6 games drawn.
Going into Sunday’s match Tipperary and Galway both sit on 4 points with Limerick and Waterford already qualified for the knockout stages above them. A draw will suffice for Liam Sheedy’s side to progress to the quarter-finals while Galway need a win.
So, knowing what’s at stake in what may have a championship like feel to the encounter, we call on Tipperary supporters to make the trip to Salthill and get behind the side as they endeavour to reach the knockout stages. We send best wishes to the team and management on Sunday.

ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE
It proved to be an out of sorts day for the Tipperary footballers last Sunday, as Longford took the points in this Allianz Football League Division 3 meeting, with the home side winning 3-12 to 3-7. Tipperary’s goals were scored by Conor Sweeney (2) and Kevin O’Halloran.
Tipperary remain on three points ahead of Leitrim and Louth in the league table, with Offaly and Derry sitting above them on five points. With two league rounds remaining, Tipperary play Offaly in Semple Stadium on March 15th and are away seven days later, on Sunday March 22nd where they will play Leitrim in Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada in Carrick on Shannon.
FBD INSURANCE COUNTY HURLING LEAGUES

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL
Best wishes to the Tipperary ladies football team who are also on the road west this weekend in the Lidl Senior National Football League. In their Round 5 fixture they too take on Galway this Sunday March 8th.
CAMOGIE
Best wishes to Tipperary camogie teams this weekend, where the seniors play Galway in the Littlewoods Ireland Camogie League Division 1 Group 2 on Sunday next, while the intermediates will play Antrim on the same day, both fixtures away from home. Last weekend the intermediates had a battling 2-6 to 0-1 win over Dublin.

Best wishes to Sean Lonergan (Moyle Rovers) as he takes charge of the first Munster Championship Final of 2020 when Kerry and Cork meet this Wednesday night, March 4th in the EirGrid Munster U20 Football in Austin Stack Park, Tralee.
POST PRIMARY HURLING
Best wishes to Cashel Community School in the Masita All-Ireland U19B Hurling Championship semi-final where they will meet Calasanctius College from Oranmore in Galway this Saturday, March 7th at 3pm. The venue has still to be confirmed.
CONGRESS
Congratulations to Larry McCarthy, New York (below) on being elected the 40th President of the GAA at its annual Congress in Croke Park last weekend. Larry will take up the position at next year’s congress and is wished well for his term in office.
BLOODY SUNDAY LECTURE
“Bloody Sunday, A Bitter Legacy or a Legacy of Bitterness?”
The first of the Tipperary GAA Bloody Sunday Commemoration Committee’s lecture series takes place next Monday, March 9th, at 8pm in the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh as historian John Flannery will host a talk entitled “Bloody Sunday, A Bitter Legacy or a Legacy of Bitterness?” This event, in conjunction with the Ormond Historical Society and Nenagh 800, promises to be an entertaining, educational and insightful talk which will discuss the events surrounding that awful day and the long-lasting effects which can be felt to the present day. All are welcome.
COACHING SEMINAR
Tipperary Coaching and Games will hold a coaching seminar ‘Developing the Youth Coach’ in association with Stakelums Office Supplies this Saturday, 7th March 2020, in LIT Thurles Conference Centre from 9.30am – 1.30pm.
We would appeal to clubs to really encourage mentors and coaches with all juvenile teams, right up to minor to book a place and attend. We would appreciate if you could book in to give us a steer on numbers for catering and logistical reasons for the event.

TIPPERARY GAA CLUBS DRAW
The final draw in the current scheme, which is the March GAA Draw, will take place this Friday 6th March in Halfway House, Rathronan at 10pm in conjunction with Moyle Rovers GAA Club.
So, it’s time to start putting plans in place for the new draw commencing May 8th, 2020.
At this stage the Draw Committee are asking clubs to clear all balances in the current draw as the Co Board currently need funds for cash flow following a deficit balance in our 2019 accounts. Please check with your club draw co-ordinator and make arrangements to make the final payment asap.
Also, check that your current draw co-ordinator is continuing in that role and if not make sure to appoint a replacement. Once you have confirmed your co-ordinator please draw up plans to maximise draw sales in your club over the coming two months.
Personalised Brochures:
The structure of the brochure produced last year was designed for two years so there will be minimal changes but naturally your own personalized section will change. Over the past number of years, many clubs have ordered personalized draw brochures, and these were a great help in promoting the Draw. Personalized brochures can be used for one or more of the following reasons: -
To promote a major club development
To highlight the winning of a championship(s)
To highlight major prize-winners in the Draw
To create awareness in your parish of club officers, committee, team mentors, activities and facilities.
Once again, we are appealing to clubs to produce a personalized brochure.

TIPPERARY ASSOCIATION DUBLIN AWARDS
The Tipperary Association Dublin annual awards for 2019 were announced this week.
For the first time since the Awards commenced in 1981 the Person of the Year award goes jointly to well-known Tipperary senior hurlers Seamus Callanan (Drom & Inch) and Brendan Maher (Borris-Ileigh).
Borris-Ileigh will be honoured on the double when one of the club’s greats and one of Tipperary’s finest hurlers from the past, Jimmy Finn, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The awards will be presented at a function in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin on Friday 27 March 2020.
Person of the Year 2019.
Speaking at the announcement of the award, Liam Myles, President of the Tipperary Association Dublin, stated that when selecting the Person of the Year, the Association looks for those that have achieved success and greatness at local, county, or national level in their chosen field in 2019. The award seeks to honour someone who has made a significant contribution to Tipperary in the year. When the nominations for 2019 were received there were two clear and outstanding candidates – Seamus Callanan and Brendan Maher. So outstanding in fact, that the Association decided they could not be separated!!
Following some consideration, the Association made the decision to honour both super candidates with a joint award – a first for the Association.
Seamus Callanan of Drom & Inch captained Tipperary to win the All-Ireland senior hurling championship in 2019, winning his third All-Ireland medal. He holds a number of senior Mid-Tipperary Championship medals with Drom & Inch going on to win the county title in 2011.
He won an All-Ireland medal at minor level in 2006 and in 2008 was a member of the Munster championship winning Tipperary team at under 21 level. One of the highest goal scorers of all time, he scored a goal for Tipperary in every game of the 2019 championship - a unique record in itself. He holds the record of scoring most championship goals (35) for Tipperary.
Apart from his scoring record, 2019 was a special year for Seamus Callanan. As captain of the senior hurlers, he led from the front culminating in a fantastic All-Ireland win last August. He was selected on the All-Star team of the year – his fourth in all. Nominated four times as hurler of the year he deservedly was chosen as Hurler of the Year for 2019.
Seamus was awarded several other national and local honours last year – voted Hurler of the Year by Supporters Club members, the Annerville Award and Daily Star Hurler of the Year.
Brendan Maher of Borris-Ileigh has, like Seamus Callanan, starred for a number of years for Tipperary. Having sustained a career threatening knee injury in the summer of 2018, he came back in 2019 to play a leading role in Tipperary winning the All Ireland. He was chosen by Liam Sheedy to man mark the best forward the opposition had in every match and willingly applied himself to this new role for the good of the team. By sacrificing his own game and style for the good of the team he made a major and significant contribution to our success in 2019. His contribution was recognised with him winning his third All Star at the end of the year.
To go along with his exploits for Tipp, he has starred for Borris-Ileigh in helping them to win the Dan Breen for the first time in 33 years. He followed this up with superb performances in the Munster club campaign. He gave a man of the match display in the Munster Club final and starred again in the All Ireland semi-final victory over the Galway champions, St. Thomas’s. While Borris lost out in the final, he lit up the games with some phenomenal and outstanding deeds which thrilled the followers of the game of hurling.
Tipperary had a great year on the sporting front in 2019. Seamus Callanan and Brendan Maher made a huge contribution to this success. They both did us all proud at club and county level with their and their team’s achievements. We have fond memories of the victory in August and the performance of Borris-Ileigh in the club championship. An interesting fact is that the two attended secondary school together in St. Joseph’s, Borrisoleigh.
The Association is proud to award the Tipperary Person of the Year for 2019 to two very worthy and deserving winners both of whom achieved success at the highest level and brought joy, pride and some satisfaction to Tipperary hurling supporters in 2019.
