Tipperary Communities Creating Jobs

As people across Ireland struggle with the recession, there are inspiring examples of communities in Tipperary creating local jobs and regenerating their areas. North Tipperary LEADER Partnership is inviting volunteers, would-be entrepreneurs, and the general public to a learning and networking event to inspire community enterprise. This will take place on Thursday evening June 20th from 7-9pm at LIT Tipperary, Thurles (Registration 6.30pm).

The event will be an opportunity to meet community entrepreneurs from Drombane Community Insulation Scheme, Loughmore Co-operative Shop and Tearooms, Templederry Community Owned Windfarm, and  Cloughjordan Community Farm – the first businesses of their kind in Ireland. There will also be a speaker from the new national Communities Creating Jobs Network.

This showcase of successful community enterprises will feature short case studies and discussion, highlight opportunities for local job creation, and help kickstart new ideas through networking and information sharing. “Massive benefits can accrue to rural communities, by establishing local sustainable co-operatives to supply their own food and energy needs,” says popular broadcaster Duncan Stewart who will open this event.

The keynote address will be by former GAA president and Munster MEP Sean Kelly on the topic “EU Supporting Communities.” According to Sean Kelly: “I’m looking forward to attending this event - the projects showcased demonstrate the potential of local voluntary groups to act as dynamic drivers of the local economy. With the proper support, such groups can coordinate and stimulate investment in their communities.“

Participants at this event will have a chance to apply for a Community Enterprise START Programme. This is to be offered by LIT Tipperary in Autumn 2013 over 6 sessions and will assist community entrepreneurs develop their ideas, and offer guidance on ethos, structures, financing etc.

Volunteers with community organisations, social entrepreneurs and local business people are invited to attend.
