Independent radio across Ireland is celebrating 25 years of operating this week. 25 years ago on 24 July 1989 Dublin’s FM104 became the first independent radio station to go live on air. Today more than 1500 people are employed in 34 independent radio stations and the sector is a vital economic and social contributor to the fabric of Ireland.
To mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary John O’Mahony, TD, Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications hosted a reception for Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) members in Leinster House. A new website http://www.independentradio25years.ie was also launched charting the history and achievements of independent radio stations across Ireland since 1989.
Local radio station Tipp FM was a part of the celebrations in Leinster House. Broadcasting in Tipperary since 1991, Tipp FM is now among the top independent radio stations in the Country. The Board, Management and Staff of the station are committed to a local ethos which is evident throughout the entire broadcasting day.
