Nenagh will surprise you with a variety of lovely shops and cafes and some fine historical buildings as you browse around the town.  You are offered a free visit to Nenagh’s Heritage & Genealogy Centre where you can capture the history of  this part of Tipperary or you can start the trail to trace your ancestors if they have Tipperary roots.

Nenagh Heritage Centre is located in two stone Georgian buildings which were built in 1840-1842 as the Governor’s House and Gatehouse of an extensive gaol complex for North Tipperary. The building is located just a short walk from Nenagh town centre.

Nenagh Castle & Franciscan Friary
The present massive tower, or donjon, was originally one of three towers interspersed in the curtain wall of a strong Norman castle.
The castle was founded by Theobald Walter (nephew of Thomas a Becket) in the first twenty years of the 13th century. A few hundred yards away, in Abbey Street, are the remains of a 13th-century Franciscan friary.  Nenagh Castle is now open to visitors since 6th June 2012.
