Following the success of last year’s Inaugural event, From Lockout to Bailout, the Nenagh Rising group will this year host an evening of conversations entitled ‘The Unlearned Legacies of War: 1914 – 2014’. This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Tom Clonan, Irish Times Security Analyst, writer, lecturer and broadcaster.
An impressive line-up of leading commentators, historians and social activists will convene at the Nenagh Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Friday 26th September 2014 to lead a conversation on World War 1 and its effect on Ireland, gaining insights from the untold personal and public stories from a pivotal period of Irish history.
Using 1914 as a backdrop, recent global conflicts will also be examined to explore the legacies that current generations will leave behind and what, if anything, has been learned.
Author of recently published, ‘Whistleblower, Soldier, Spy’, Tom Clonan is a regular media commentator, most recently on the conflict in Gaza. He will give an overview of his personal and professional experience of the Irish Armed Forces, from the controversial use of Shannon Airport, to Iraq, Syria and Guantanamo Bay.
Also speaking is Padraig Yeates, journalist, publicist and trade union activist. Author of ‘Lockout’ and many more acclaimed publications, Padraig will set the scene for 1914-Ireland.
Majorie Wharton, local acclaimed author and personality, will give a personal account of her own family’s experience of war and Philip Orr, historian, community activist and author of ‘Field of Bones: An Irish Division at Gallipoli’, will give offer a Unionist perspective of the First World War.
‘The Unlearned Legacies of War: 1914 – 2014’ is a Nenagh Risings initiative, founded by Gerry Coffey and Kathleen O’Meara. The event will be the second in a series of commemorative events planned for the coming years to mark the revolution and evolution of Ireland reflected in the Decade of Commemorations.
