Positive Ageing Week

September 201330th

Features

Positive Ageing Week

If your're 65 today, chances are you’ll still be alive in Nenagh in 20 years time. Our increased longevity is one of mankind’s greatest achievements of the last 100 years. So that’s the good news! What we also need to consider however, is that as we age, our healthy life expectancy differs to our actual life expectancy. This means that in order to age well, we need to think about how we are going to stay happy and independent, even if we are affected by illness or disability.

Positive Ageing Week is a national campaign run by Age Action and the week runs from Friday September 27th to Saturday October 5th. Part of this campaign is to encourage people to think of how they would adapt in the event of a hospital stay, or a need to use a wheelchair for a while. People over the age of 65 should think about how they could live at home, if they couldn’t use the stairs or were not able to drive their car. The time to put in a downstairs bathroom is when everyone is healthy, because this takes time, not when you are about to be discharged from Nenagh hospital after breaking a hip.

The more thought that people put into contingency planning as they age, the better outcomes people will have as they age. We nearly all plan for our funerals. What we also need to do is plan for how we will stay happy over the months and years before our funerals!
