Tipperary TD Alan Kelly was last Friday elected as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. The Portroe native and current Junior Transport Minister won 51.5% of the total vote to be elected on the first count.
It is believed that the Tipperary TD will be in Cabinet later this week. “Usually the deputy leader in the circumstances like this would be appointed to Cabinet. So yes, I would expect that would be the norm, but at the end of the day that will be a matter for the new Tánaiste. “I think every brief is up for discussion. I think the whole Cabinet bar a number of, probably a couple of roles, is up for discussion,” Mr Kelly said.
Mr Kelly is holding a number of meetings with new Labour leader Joan Burton to discuss a new agenda for the party.
Tipperary Fine Gael Deputy Noel Coonan has congratulated Minister Alan Kelly on his election as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
Commenting on the announcement, Deputy Coonan said: "I look forward to Minister Kelly's appointment as a Senior Minister in Cabinet and to working closely alongside him as a colleague in Government to advance the best interests of Tipperary. I wish him every success in his new position."
