Film:‘Quartet’

This Thursday 8th May, as part of the Bealtaine festival Nenagh Arts Centre are screening ‘Quartet’.

Based on Ronald Harwood's stage play of the same name, QUARTET is a wickedly comic film about redefining old age and growing old with hope; demonstrating how art and the human spirit remains undimmed even as the brightest stars start to fade.

‘Quartet’ is directed by Dustin Hoffman and features a stellar cast including Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins and Maggie Smith. A gentle and charming film, ‘Quartet’  focuses on the drama which ensues when the residents of a home for retired musicians are joined by a diva from their shared pasts.

Admission is FREE Thursday 8th May, 2pm.

Music: ‘Strictly Cash’

Strictly Cash: The Life and Music of Johnny Cash’ are more than just a band, they are long - time fans of the legendary Johnny Cash.

Singer Barry, who has met and chatted with both Johnny and June, can remember singing along to ‘40 Shades of Green’ every time it came on the radio back in the early 60’s, and buying his first Johnny Cash record in 1971.‘Strictly Cash’s sound is as authentic as you'll get, created by the boom-chicka-boom of the big upright bass, the steady clickety-clack of the drums, stunning lead guitar mixed with acoustic guitar and vocals. Barry brought the show to Mountjoy Prison in 2008, for which he wrote the song ‘Mountjoy’ as a tribute to Cash's prison songs, and a year later, recreated his famous show at San Quentin, in Cork's Crane Lane Theatre. He’s also a regular guest at German Johnny Cash Day.

This show is a must-see for all fans of the Man in Black, Johnny Cash.

Admission is €10. Advance booking advised Saturday 10th May, 9pm.

Lecture: Ireland’s Golden Eagle Project

Dr Allan Mee, The Golden Eagle Trust’s White-Tailed Eagle Reintroduction Project Manager will visit Nenagh Arts Centre on Wednesday May 7th to give a short lecture and discuss the Project at a free event for the public.

The Golden Eagle Reintroduction Project is managed by the Golden Eagle Trust Limited in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The programme looks to reestablish a viable self-sustaining breeding
population of golden eagles in north-west Ireland after an absence of almost 100 years.

Manager at the Arts Centre, Brendan Maher said this week: “Unfortunately, one of the first two white-tailed eagles to hatch in Ireland in more than a century was found shot dead in Co. Tipperary in March. This is particularly tragic, given the amount of effort and work that goes into such a project. We’re delighted to get Dr. Allan Mee to the Centre to speak about the project and give the wider public some insight into how it all works. It will be a great opportunity to talk to someone dealing with the project on the ground.”

This event is free to the public Wedndesday 7th May, 8pm.
