‘Kitty In The Lane’ for Nenagh Arts Centre

‘Kitty in the Lane’, a play written and performed by Upperchurch playwright and actor Áine Ryan will be performed at Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday, January 31st, 2015.

It is over a year since the play was first performed and the January 31st date is an ideal chance for anybody in Tipperary to catch the play being performed in a local venue. The play has been edited and improved after the show’s outing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014. The play had great success at Edinburgh, including a five star review from theatre magazine Broadway Baby, where the critic James MacNamera called it 'an intense, poetic study of loneliness, cruelty and rural isolation, a mesmeric continuation of the Irish literary tradition.' International critic Paul Levy from Fringe Review described Áine Ryan as 'a wondrous actor', applauding her performance of Kitty as a 'full-blooded, committed portrayal of a woman in lonely, mental decline' and described the piece as 'a visceral monologue, in the hands of a superb performer.'

‘Kitty in the Lane’ tells the story of a twenty year old girl living in an isolated cottage in rural south west Ireland with her elderly father. In conjunction to caring for her father, Kitty is managing the family farm alone, due to her brother’s recent death. The action takes place on the eve of a local beauty pageant with Kitty waiting for her boyfriend to escort her to this event for a night escaping her domestic duties. As Kitty waits for his arrival we get a glimpse into her world, and her relationship with family, friends and community. The play is a dark drama, unlocking Kitty's perspective of life as a young woman in a lonesome environment, but is also filled with comedic relief through Kitty's witty observations and anecdotes of her own reckless activity in the past.

The Nenagh Arts Centre performance is part of the first outing for the play in 2015 and will also mark the first since running a consecutive twenty six dates in Edinburgh. The lighting and design technician is Emily Matthews, a performer and stage technician from Holycross, who was also managing lighting and sound for the show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Tickets are €15/€12 concessions online at www.nenagharts.com. Phone booking from the Arts Centre in Banba Square on 067 34400.
