Fitzgerald wins for Visit Nenagh

Just a week after bringing home 3 County Rider awards from the An Post Rás, Mehall Fitzgerald continued his growing form in the annual Blarney Criterium last Saturday night. The Blarney Criterium was a very lively race from start to finish and many attacks by various riders were neutralized by race favourite Paidi O'Brien (Planet Tri) and Mehall Fitzgerald (Visit Nenagh).

The race was stopped midway, due to a serious crash. Matt Slattery (on the Visit Nenagh team for the Rás) was brought to hospital with a suspected broken hand. After the restart it was another barrage of attacks on the tight 1.2km circuit but nothing was able to leave the chasing peloton behind.

It came down to a final showdown between the fastest man from the present (Paidi O'Brien) and Mehall Fitzgerald, who is renowned for his fast finish in the past. Mehall Fitzgerald took victory over Paidi O'Brien (Planet Tri), Barry Meade (Planet Tri) finished third.

Racing also took place in Donegal this weekend, where the Scully brothers completed in Rás Donegal, a 3 day stage race in the mountains of Donegal. It was junior Mark Downey (Cycling Ulster) who led the way and grabbed the overall victory. Gary Scully was the best placed Nenagh rider, he finished 14th overall after 4 tough stages in the Donegal mountains, just 1m 59secs behind overall winner Downey. Shane Scully finished 16th overall. Next week racing will take place in Ennis, where riders line up for Rás Clare.
