Entrepreneur Niall Harbison Samples Bikes, Shoes, Chillies and Bread in Cloughjordan

Chef, social media and online entrepreneur, and author Niall Harbison will be visiting five businesses in the Cloughjordan area later this month and will provide feedback in an open conversational forum on Monday, 20 October at 8pm in the WeCreate Workspace, Cloughjordan.

The five businesses selected are all young, and all are looking forward to an opportunity to receive constructive feedback from an experienced external entrepreneur. They are Bike Park Ireland, Heavenly Footwear, Irish Chilli Farm, Riot Rye Bake House and Bread School, and the WeCreate fab lab. Bike Park Ireland opened earlier this year at Fairymount Farm. Building on their previous success with the Fairymount  Farm walks, Graham Kenny and family decided to take the plunge and develop what is now, arguably, Ireland’s best mountain biking facility. Bike Park Ireland takes advantage of the naturally challenging geography of Knockshegowna and combines it with the cycling expertise of Velo bicycle shop of Birr, who have an onsite rental and repairs shop at Bike Park Ireland, and a quality café onsite.

Heavenly Footwear was launched this September by Mary Carroll of Cloughjordan. She says ‘Heavenly Footwear was created to cater for ladies like me who have trailed the country looking for a pair of shoes or boots and come home empty handed – not because you didn’t find the right colour, the right style but because you couldn’t find the right size! Most shops just don’t cater for ladies who have large feet, who require wide fitting shoes or for women with small feet.’ Heavenly Footwear sells online at heavenlyfootwear.ie, or you can book an appointment to visit the Heavenly Footwear boutique for a truly personal shopping experience.
Commercial chilli farms are very common in the UK, but there were none in Ireland until earlier this year. Chris and Karen Young of Ballingarry saw a gap in the market for local Irish chillies and decided to fill it. Chillies from the Irish Chilli Farm are now sold in the Milk Market in Limerick and Roughty Foodie at the English Market in Cork.

Riot Rye Bake House and Bread School have long experience of baking natural wood-fired bread. Their bread school is a new venture, however. Joe Fitzmaurice of Riot Rye says ‘Riot Rye Bakehouse & Bread School is committed to creating and actively fostering a culture of bread without the use of industrial additives or chemicals. We believe that food producers have a responsibility to those consuming their products and the wider community, with regard to their nutrition and well-being. We exclusively use organic flours, natural and wild ingredients in our breads. We employ sustainable production methods with our highly energy efficient wood-fired oven, fuelled by locally sourced timber. We believe in the right of access for all through education to nutritional, life-affirming foods.’ Their bread-making courses start this month.

WeCreate hosts one of the few fab labs in Ireland. A fab lab, which is short for fabrication laboratory, contains computer-controlled equipment that enable users to make almost anything. Fab labs can radically reduce the cost of creating prototypes, thereby helping anyone with an idea for a new product to experiment and perfect their idea. WeCreate also provides co-working spaces for start-ups and small businesses, educational courses, meeting rooms, and corporate away days.

Everyone has an opportunity to learn from and network with these innovative businesses at the open forum with Niall Harbison on Monday, 20 October at 8pm in WeCreate. Niall will discuss each business with their owners in a conversational forum and give feedback, advice and tips based on his experience running four start-ups, which he details in his book Get Sh*t Done.

Tickets for the forum with Niall Harbison are €20. However, you can get in free by presenting a copy of Niall’s book, which is available in all good bookshops. To book a place for the forum, contact Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Cloughjordan on 0505 42123.

Other businesses participating in Niall Harbison’s visit include Sheelagh na Gig bookshop, Wild Irish Foragers and Preservers, Cloughjordan Community Farm, Django’s Hostel, and Cloughjordan House and Cookery School. The event is supported by the Cloughjordan Business Network and the Tipperary Local Enterprise Office.
