Classic French Movie ‘Breathless’ Screens at Nenagh Arts Centre this Thursday

The second in Nenagh Arts Centre’s season of classic cinema takes place this Thursday,  the 17th of October with French director Jean Luc Godard’s  film ‘Breathless’ (Au Bout de Souffle), a mainstay of the ‘French New Wave’ from 1960. It tells the offbeat love story between Michel Poiccard, a Humphrey Bogart wannabe and Patricia Franchini, an American who sells newspapers on the boulevards of Paris.

Speaking at the Arts Centre this week, manager Brendan Maher said: “We are screening this series of films that people may have heard were classics, but wouldn’t have the opportunity to see them on the big screen. ‘Breathless’ was pretty ground -breaking for its time, substituting dramatically staged scenes for documentary style reality, and presenting characters who were flawed and unsure of themselves. The use of lightweight film cameras, which were developed during the second world war, allowed this type of film to be made. It was shot in three weeks on a tiny budget, but it’s legacy went on to influence some of the top directors of our time, including Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola.”

Adm. is €8 on the door and the film screens at Nenagh Arts Centre on Thursday, 17th October at 8 p.m.
