Busy Weekend for Nenagh Neptune Swimming Club

It was a busy weekend for Nenagh Neptune which saw our swimmers competing in meets at opposite ends of the Country.

In Askeaton we had 34 enthusiastic swimmers taking part in a grade C gala.  The swimmers demonstrated the tremendous amount of work and commitment they had put in since their last gala with 74 personal best achieved on the day.  Special mention must be given to Aoife Burke and Josh Geoghegan.  Aoife knocked off a whopping 1.10s in her 100m IM, in a swim that was described as “simply amazing” by the stroke judge on the day.  Likewise Josh achieved personal bests in all 3 of his swims, knocking off on average of 8 seconds per race.  Congratulations also to Alex Stewart, Sophie Schouwenburg and Nicole Casey, all of whom achieved their B grade on the today.  John Lenihan and Grace Donovan who are within seconds of moving up and it will only be a matter of time before they achieve the grade.

National Championship

The national championships were held at the NAC over the weekend where the Countries top swimmers were competing including such as Syerika Mc Mahon, Irish European Champion and swimmers from Great Britain, Hungry and Egypt.  Nenagh Neptune can take pride in the fact that we were represented by Isabelle Dunne who completed in the 50 back crawl.  This was a fantastic opportunity for Isabelle to compete alongside some of the best swimmers in the Country.  Saturday morning saw Isabelle compete in her heat when she achieved a new personal best of 32.91 which was good enough to get her into the semi-final on the Saturday afternoon.  In the semi-final Isabelle took a further .30 sec off her time, which saw her into the final on Sunday.  In the final Isabelle took a further .36 sec off semi-final time, which was good enough for her to achieve 7th place and the 6th best Irish Athletic overall.

This was a fantastic achievement for Isabelle, who not long ago was herself taking part in C galas and an inspiration for all our young swimmers.  Taking into account that many of the top swimmers train in excess of 20 hours a week and Isabelle swims 4 and half hours.  A special thanks must be given to the Dunne family, in particular Isabelle’s sister Owlyn who made her confirmation on the Sunday but was very happy to see her sister leave the party with their dad Gavin so as to travel to Dublin on the afternoon and compete in the final.

Many thanks also to Isabelle’s friends and club mates who travelled up to Dublin on the Saturday or Sunday to support Isabelle in this event.  A special mention also to 3 of our parents who also attended the Nationals acting in official capacity on pool  side.  As always a special thanks to all the parents who accompanied swimmers especially at our C gala and to the coaches for their hard work and assistance on the day.
