St Mary’s Secondary School student Mary Spillane received the ‘Best Girl Award’ for her project investigating methods of classifying sheet music automatically according to the difficulty level. Mary designed an automatic process to grade how difficult a musical piece was by exploring specific musical factors such as the number of note combinations, the length of the piece, the key changes, as well as other factors that would contribute to the level of difficulty with in a piece.
