Terryglass Arts Festival 2014

Terryglass Arts Festival takes place from Wednesday 13th August to Sunday 17th August.

The 16th Annual Terryglass Arts Festival will be officially opened by internationally acclaimed Visual Artist Joy Gerrard at 7.30pm on Wednesday 13th August in the Terryglass Festival Marquee. A native of the area, Joy has been commissioned to create an artwork on Lough Derg, ‘Permanent Rainbows’, for this year’s festival.

A large attendance is expected for Wednesday’s festival opening, followed by a concert of barbershop music from Ireland’s leading male-voice harmony group, 4 in a Bar, in the Festival Marquee Hall at 8.30pm (Admission: adults €10, children €5).

After months of hard work, Festival Chairperson Andrea Egan, is eagerly looking forward to the festival and has extended an invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening.

“The festival has received tremendous support and good will from our local community here in Terryglass and I would like to extend a warm invitation to members of the public to attend the official opening and support our concert of barbershop music tonight,” said Ms. Egan.

Headline acts performing during this year’s festival include singer/songwriter Jimmy MacCarthy who performs his “Prophecy/ Conspiracy?” concert in Terryglass Church on Friday 15th August at 8pm. One of Ireland’s foremost songwriters, MacCarthy has penned most well- known songs in the Irish contemporary repertoire including ’No Frontiers’, ‘Ride On’, ‘Katie’ and ‘The Contender’. (Admission €25)

Satirising the nation’s tendency towards religious hysteria is “The Year of the Moving Statues”, performed by the Rural Vernacular Company. Presented to excited acclaim at the Mick Lally Theatre and at The Town Hall Theatre in Galway, the play is wildly funny and wickedly surreal. (Thursday 14th August in Village Hall at 8pm, Admission €10)

In addition to the nightly entertainment, festival organisers have planned over 55 workshops which are guaranteed to provide fun and entertainment for all the family. Highlights include a series of drama master classes with respected UK theatre director Roland Jaquarello.

There’s more family entertainment at Terryglass Quay on Saturday night 16th August with performances from The Army Band of the 2nd Brigade and the traditional after dark monster fireworks display.

Sunday is family fun day featuring The Gingerbreadman puppet show from Miriam Lambert puppets, The Exploration Dome with short colourful 3D films in a dome tent and a street performance from Buí Bolg. (Sunday 17th August from 1pm in Terryglass Village Square).

Local food producers and craftspeople will showcase their produce with tastings and demonstrations from the best Co. Tipperary artisan producers. Providing jaw dropping musical entertainment is The Blood Red Mountain Band followed by Galway band Mikey and the Scallywags.
