Portroe Gathering 2015

The third annual Portroe Gathering will take place from Friday 28th August – Sunday 30thAugust. Building on the success of the previous 2 years we have an action packed event in store for parishioners and visitors alike. Once again the community will be to the fore and we will endeavour to promote our local businesses throughout the weekend of culture, food, and activity for all the family. Officially launching on Friday 28th August in

Portroe village where we will hold a mass at the mass rock site near Ballycarrido. In what is the first mass at this site in over 15 years, we will provide a brief history of this area of our community. This will be followed by a visitors welcome and information evening in Portroe Hall. Here we are delighted to announce the appearance of Kerry legend Pat Spillane who takes a huge interest in the development of Rural Ireland. Pat will face a different type of challenge in Portroe where he will be challenged by Kilkenny great Eddie Brennan and Tipperary camogie legend Claire O’Callaghan (Madden) in a celebrity bake off. This will be followed by our homegrown hero awards and greetings from around the world.

Saturday 30th August has a picturesque leisurely country walk to the iconic Millennium Cross situated 1200m up from the roadside on Cloneybrien Hill overlooking Lough Derg and with a viewing point across 6 counties. The weary walker will be treated to refreshments on return to base at Killoran Community Centre. On Saturday evening we have outdoor platform dancing in Killoran with music by Tom McCarthy. Sunday 31st August will see the Jim Madden

memorial cup be contested in Portroe GAA featuring a BBQ and fun games. Everyone is welcome. On Sunday afternoon the weekend’s festivities move to the beautiful Garrykennedy where we will host a family fun day. Famed Storyteller Eddie Lenihan will entertain the children by the lakeshore with face painting and treats provided. We will have short boat trips on the Portroe area of the lake also. With over 1000 people expected at the various events in 2015 an action packed weekend is in store.

Come and see, we think you will like it!
