Military History Archives Talk for Ormond Historical Society

Ormond Historical Society are delighted to announce that Commandant Padraic Kennedy, Officer in Charge Irish Military History Archives in Cathal Brugha Barracks, will deliver the Society’s lecture for February. This lecture is particularly timely in view of the release last month of the first phase of the pension application records relating to service in 1916 and the War of Independence.

The lecture will outline the work of the Military Archives department and the records which they hold. It will also include details on the recently released pension records, as they relate to North Tipperary. In addition to the pension records Military Archives also hold witness statements from many participants of those turbulent times. Statements of local interest which they have available include those of Frank McGrath, Sean Gaynor, Jimmy Leahy, Ned O’Leary and Con Spain, to name but a few. In view of the tremendous interest shown in these records and the demand on the archivist’s time, OHS believe we are fortuitous to be able to put on this lecture at the present time, particularly with such an eminent speaker as Cmdt. Padraic Kennedy.

This event takes place in the Abbey Court Hotel on Monday, February 17th at 8.30pm.
