Visit Nenagh.ie Cycling Team Prepare for the An Post Rás

by Visit Nenagh.ie team manager Rene Van Dam

Only for the second time in the long history of the An Post Rás a Nenagh based team will take part in this prestigious 8 day cycling event. Team Visit Nenagh represented North Tipperary for the first time in 2012 , followed by this years entry. This years edition will be ever so special for the team and the town, as the Rás organisation awarded earlier this year a stage end to the market town.

It is not the first time that the Rás visits Nenagh, the first visit took place in 1953, followed by many returns, but it has been a while since the last visit in 2003. The An Post Rás starts this Sunday in Dunboyne, and 135km later the riders will finish in Longford. On day 2 the it will travel from Longford to Nenagh, where the riders and followers of the An Post Rás can expect a very warm welcome. The An Post Rás will finish on Sunday May 26th in Skerries.

This years An Post Rás will have competitors from countries as far as Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada and USA to name a few, accompanied by European destinations like Belgium, Austria and Holland and of course the National County teams including our very own Visit Nenagh.ie team representing Tipperary.

So look out for the boys in the Nenagh colours!

Visit Nenagh.ie team

Michael Butler (Nenagh) - Michael is team captain of the Visit Nenagh.ie team and the only rider ever from Nenagh to compete in the Rás, this Sunday he will start his 8th Rás , finishing all previous 7 previous events.

Mehall Fitzgerald (Clonmel) – Mehall is a multiple National Road Race Champion and also a multiple Rás stage winner. The last time the Rás visited Nenagh, Mehall won the bunch sprint finishing 6th.

Matt Slattery (Killarney ) - Second Rás for Matt on the Visit Nenagh.ie team. Matt is a super domestique and an all rounder on the road. Matt is looking for personal success in this years Rás as it has been a while since his last victory in 2012.

Simon Ryan (Tipperary Town) – Second year on the Visit Nenagh.ie team. Simon had the best personal results in the Rás from 2012 , until a nasty crash on the penultimate stage knocked him out of the race. Simon’s speciality is the sprint.

Eoin Mc Carthy (Fermoy) – Eoin is throughout the year based in Belgium where he is riding with the Terra footwear team, but is back in Ireland for the An Post Rás to ride as a guest on the Visit Nenagh.ie team. At 20 years old, Eoin is the youngest of the team and will start his first Rás.

The team will be managed by René van Dam and assisted by Denis Dunworth (mechanic), Mark Shannon ( mechanic) and Michael Costello (physio).

The team is sponsored by Nenagh.ie, Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh Chamber of Commerce, AdSmart, Turas Bikes, Pierse Motors (Tipperary Town), Mags Homebaking, Sportsplus Physiotherapy Clinic and Mayor of Nenagh Lalor McGee.
