‘Kitty In The Lane’ for Nenagh Arts Centre this Saturday

The play ‘Kitty in the Lane’, written and performed by Upperchurch playwright and actor Áine Ryan will be performed at Nenagh Arts Centre this Saturday, January 31st, 2015.

The plays has received great notices in the recent past particularly in the Edinburgh Fringe. The play  tells the story of a twenty year old girl living in an isolated cottage in rural south west Ireland with her elderly father. As well as minding her father, Kitty has to manage the family farm alone, due to her brother’s recent death. The action takes place on the eve of a local beauty pageant with Kitty waiting for her boyfriend to escort her to this event for a night escaping her domestic duties. As Kitty waits for his arrival we get a glimpse into her world, and her relationship with family, friends and community. The play is a dark drama, unlocking Kitty's perspective of life as a young woman in a lonesome environment, but is also filled with comedic relief through Kitty's witty observations and anecdotes of her own reckless activity in the past.

The Nenagh Arts Centre performance is part of the first outing for the play in 2015 and will also mark the first since running a consecutive twenty six dates in Edinburgh. The lighting and design technician is Emily Matthews, a performer and stage technician from Holycross, who was also managing lighting and sound for the show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Tickets are €15/€12 concessions online at www.nenagharts.com. Phone booking from the Arts Centre in Banba Square on 067 34400.

‘Monday’s Child’ play for children at Nenagh Arts Centre

Ireland’s premier producer of theatre for children, Barnstorm Theatre Company, brings its acclaimed ‘Monday’s Child’ to Nenagh Arts Centre on Saturday afternoon, February 7th. Written by award-winning writer Brendan Murray (Writers’ Guild of Great Britain -Best Children’s Play 2012) this play was selected as one of 2014’s Theatre Top Ten by the UK’s Guardian newspaper.

Created especially for children aged four and older, ‘Monday’s Child’ tells the simple poetic story of the unique bond between a little girl and an old woman suffering memory loss. Together in a dream-like garden, they sing and dance and dress up as they joyously explore a treasure trove of memory boxes.

For the young girl in the play, the older woman’s memory loss becomes a word game, a puzzle to be solved. If the girl ever feels frustrated, she is never sharp or critical with her companion. At opposite ends of the life cycle, the girl is building her vocabulary while the older woman appears to be losing hers. Delightfully, the use of made-up words makes sense to them both; a clock is a “time-ticker”, binoculars are “faraways” and when determining what day it is, the girl confidently informs the older woman that “It’s today”. Children were on the edge of their seats with excitement and anticipation as box after box of colourful surprises was revealed, while the adults find the poignancy of the older woman’s struggle with memory loss deeply resonant.

Comments about the play range from ‘Pure magic!’ (Kilkenny Reporter), to ‘Whimsical, fun and full of adventure!’ and ‘worth every second of the performance; gorgeous theatre for young and old’ (KCLR Arts Show).  This production of Monday’s Child will resonate with all ages, long after the performance.

For children aged 4+ and their families, the play tales place at Nenagh Arts Centre with two performances at 2.30 and 4.0 p.m. on Saturday 7th February.

Adm. is €5 per person. Booking on 067 34400 or online at www.nenagharts.com

Art Classes: Exploring the urban landscape at Nenagh Arts Centre

Tutor Ger Whelan presents  series of workshops based on drawing and painting the town environment at Nenagh Arts Centre starting on the 5th of February. These sessions are designed for people who are interested in exploring how to sketch, draw and develop ideas as a professional artist might.

This is an eight week programme that aims to facilitate this idea. The individual  sessions will focus on sketching and drawing examples of the local urban landscape.

Participants will initially work from enlarged A3 sized photo, from the comfort of Nenagh Arts Centre and weather permitting, later classes will involve drawing and sketching from real life. Sessions will explore the basics of observing, understanding, sketching and representing the urban landscape from an artistic point of view. The artistic side should evolve naturally as the programme develops. Written and visual aids will be provided with each session, complimented by reference material on YouTube and other media.

Pencils, pens, paper, paints, canvas, should  be brought by those taking part and as required. Nenagh Arts Centre will host these workshops, each Thursday morning, from 10.30a.m. to 12.30p.m. starting 5th February. The course lasts 8 weeks, with a maximum of 10 participants. The fee for the eight weeks is €70 per person and places can be booked from the Centre on 067 34400.
