SENIOR MANAGERIAL APPOINTMENTS

As had been flagged in the past number of days, Liam Sheedy (Portroe) was ratified at Monday night's county board meeting as Tipperary senior hurling manager and will take up a 3 year term. It brings to close the process to find Mick Ryan's replacement following his August departure.

Announcing the outcome of the process to find Tipperary’s new senior hurling manager, Tipperary County Board Chairman John Devane said: “We are delighted to announce Liam Sheedy will be taking over as manager of our senior hurling team. Liam brings an unrivalled mix of track-record, passion and conviction to the table. We thank him for his commitment and we look forward to providing him with the full support of the county board as we move into the 2019 season."

“I would also like to state, on behalf of the County Board and all who support Tipperary hurling, our thanks to others who put their names forward for this post over recent weeks. We have been hugely impressed by the quality of candidate and also by their passion for Tipperary hurling. We look forward to working with them in the future.”

Liam Sheedy was equally delighted to be back at the helm saying, “I am taking up the role with a huge sense of excitement and enthusiasm, mostly at the thought of getting back into the dressing-room and out on the field with Tipperary’s best."

“I come on board again just two years after Michael Ryan led Tipperary to a superb All-Ireland title. He has handed over an incredibly talented squad that I look forward to finalising over the coming weeks and months and getting Tipperary ready for 2019.”

His backroom team will be announced in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Liam Kearns' second year of his two year term was formally rubber stamped as he too sets about assembling his backroom team for 2019.

All outstanding management teams will be ratified at the October county board meeting.

We extend best wishes to the two Liam's and their panels when finalised for 2019 as Tipperary GAA and supporters alike look forward to putting the disappointments of 2018 well and truly behind them.

FÉILE CLASSICAL

Féile Classical certainly lived up to and exceeded expectations following a magical weekend in Semple Stadium. Music fans travelled from near and far to rekindle memories of the original Féile and probably more importantly meet old acquaintances as bands of the time once more electrified the crowd with classic numbers.

The success of Féile Classical couldn't have happened without the assistance of many including An Garda Síochána and the local community.

A special word of thanks many numerous people and groups but especially to Con Hogan and David Morgan and all Semple Stadium staff and stewards and CWB promoters for making the event the success that it was.

SCÓR

The Scór season ahead will mark its golden jubilee and plans are already afoot to mark the occasion at all levels with concerts, exhibitions and souvenir programs and publications being mentioned. However all this will be for nought,  if we fail to get the word out there that all this is happening and also fail to get people to participate and support our competitions in the coming year.

Clubs are requested to please make an extra effort in this jubilee year to make it a year to remember for Scór and to bring back some of the glory days to make this a Scór season not to forget.

THANKS

Tipperary Co. Board extend a special word of thanks to JP McManus on his wonderful generosity coming on the back of Limerick's All-Ireland success by donating €100k to all county boards for distribution equally among clubs of each county. His big-heartedness was sincerely endorsed by all at Monday night's county board meeting.

HANDBALL

The Munster juvenile finals were hosted by Ballina and Lahorna on Saturday last where Tipperary competed in 4 finals winning 3 of those. The winners were as follows - Boys U12 Doubles Charlie Grace and Evan Molloy (Ballina); Girls U14D Hannah Grace and Leanne Gould (Lahorna) and Girls U15S Amy Mc Keogh (Ballina), best of luck to all our juveniles in the All-Ireland Semi Finals.

The Adult All-Ireland Semi-Finals were contested in various venues throughout the country with mixed results for Tipperary players, again best of luck to all our players contesting All-Ireland Finals.

In the Men’s Senior Doubles Ger Coonan and David Hickey (Ballina) will contest the All-Ireland Quarter Final against Gavin Buggy & Daniel Kavanagh on Saturday 6th October.

BOOK LAUNCH

Cork University Press will on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7pm, launch a book entitled 'Sport In County Tipperary 1840-1880' by Pat Bracken in the Source Library. In his study of the development of sport in Co. Tipperary Pat looks at how the popularity of sport grew during this period, in what may be seen as a barometer county for the rest of the country. While there have been similar studies for Co. Westmeath by Tom Hunt and Co. Donegal by Conor Curran, both published by Cork University Press, this is the first county study, which covers the famine period and in it, among other fascinating insights, Bracken challenges the perception that hurling was in decline in Tipperary before the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884. Using evidence from Petty Sessions court records he shows that further evidence for not only hurling, but ball playing in general, may be identified in these underused records.

However, this is only part of the story. To hear more of the way sport developed in Tipperary and how it was influenced you are invited to come along to the Source on October 3rd to capture a unique insight into sport during that period of time in Tipperary.
