SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Getting much needed game time under their belt the Tipperary senior hurlers got their All-Ireland defence back on track with a hard pressed victory over a determined Westmeath in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in Semple Stadium last Saturday, on a score line of 2-18 to 0-15.

Making their championship debut for Tipperary were Daragh Mooney (Éire Óg Annacarty-Donohill), Tomás Hamill (Moyne-Templetuohy) and Joe O'Dwyer (Killenaule) and we congratulate them on being part of the twenty players ensuring Tipp would be in the draw for round 2 on Monday morning. Also, making championship debuts as substitutes were Stephen O'Brien (Ballina) and Tom Fox (Éire Óg Annacarty-Donohill).

Goals from John O'Dwyer (Killenaule) and John McGrath (Loughmore-Castleiney) were central to Tipp's progression to the next round where Dublin now await this Saturday evening, July 8th at 5pm, as part of an exciting double bill in Semple Stadium, with Kilkenny v Waterford following at 7pm.

Best wishes to Niall O'Meara (Kilruane MacDonaghs) for a speedy recovery from an injury received in the second half of last Saturday's match.

So with Dublin arriving to the Field of Legends, a review of the history between the sides in the main is most favourable for Tipp, with 1917 being the only blip on the chart.

Previous championship meetings show 10 matches have been played with Tipp ahead on 8 wins to Dublin's 1 and 1 draw. The last meeting was in the 2014 All-Ireland Quarter-Final.

In the 1896 Final, played on the 27/3/1898 at Jones’ Road, now Croke Park, Tipperary (represented by Tubberadora) defeated Dublin (Commercials) 8-14 to 0-4 and the referee was Dan Woods (Dublin). The 1906 Final was played 27/10/1907 at Kilkenny and this time Tipperary (Thurles) defeated Dublin (Faughs) 3-16 to 3-8 where the referee was Tom Irwin (Cork).

The 1908 Final played on 25/4/1909 at Jones’ Road ended in a draw with Tipperary (Thurles) 2-5 to Dublin (Kickhams) 1-8 with Tom Irwin (Cork) the referee once again. The replay took place on 27/6/1909 at Athy and this time Tipperary made no mistake winning 3-15 to 1-5 with J. McCarthy (Cork) the referee.

Those looking for a lucky omen may want to skip this reference as the 1917 Final played 28/10/1917 at Croke Park saw Dublin (represented by Collegians) defeat Tipperary 5-4 to 4-2 in a match refereed by Willie Walsh (Waterford).

A gap then to the 1930 Final played on 7/9/1930 at Croke Park saw Tipperary win 2-7 to 1-3 with the referee on this occasion being Stephen Jordan (Galway).

It was 1961 before the sides met again on 3/9/1961 at Croke Park and the last time in the All-Ireland Final with Tipperary winning by the narrowest of margins, Tipperary 0-16 Dublin 1-12 with referee Gerry Fitzgerald (Limerick) in charge.

The new millennium was well settled by the time the 2007 Qualifier came round when Tipp and Dublin next met in a Round 2 Group B game played on 7/7/2007 at Parnell Park with Tipperary winning 1-20 to 1-11 with Dominic Connolly (Kilkenny) the referee in charge. 4 years later in 2011 in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on 14/8/2011 at Croke Park, Tipperary had four points to spare in a 1-19 to 0-18 defeat of Dublin with Cathal McAllister (Cork) holding court over this one.

The most recent championship encounter was in the 2014 All-Ireland Quarter-Final on 27/7/2014 at Semple Stadium when Tipperary scored 2-23 to Dublin 0-16 with referee Brian Gavin (Offaly) in charge that day.

So as indicated Dublin have only beaten Tipperary once in championship hurling and that was when they dethroned the Premier County, in the 1917 All-Ireland Final, which was played at Croke Park on October 27th. So in that beware for Tipperary as no Tipp supporter or player for that matter would wish to see history repeat itself in 2017.

A contemporary report noted that it was a fine day of sunshine, a good ground and a sympathetic (to Dublin) with a crowd of 12,000 approx. Collegians had the Dublin selection and they augmented their line up with ‘several seasoned hurlers from Southern counties, who qualified by their residence in the capital’.

Dublin got off to a great start and led by 2-2 to nil before Tipp goals from Hugh Shelly and Jer ‘Darby’ Collison got them to half time 2-2 to 2-0. Bob Mockler who had been involved with previous Tipperary teams, was in great form for Dublin. Tipp got two second half goals per Willie O’Dwyer and Mick Leahy, but Dublin got three courtesy of Bob Mockler, Brendan Considine and Joe Phelan (his second). Considine had come on as an early substitute for the injured Hugh Burke and his goal, doubling on a chest high pass from Frank Burke was among the best seen in a Final up to then.

Afterwards, the winning captain Dr. John M. Ryan was carried shoulder high to the pavilion, where cheering was long continued by Dublin supporters.
Tipperary had players from Boherlahan, Thurles, Killenaule, Toomevara, Moneygall and Two Mile Borris, while Dublin was represented mainly, by players from Collegians, Faughs, Rapparees and Commercials.

In contrast Tipp's last win in an All-Ireland Final over Dublin was as mentioned previously in 1961and the Tipperary line out that day was as follows; Donal O’Brien, Matt Hassett (Capt), Mick Maher, Kieran Carey, Mick Burns, Tony Wall, John Doyle, Matt O’Gara (0-2), Theo English, Jimmy Doyle (0-9), Liam Devaney, Donie Nealon (0-3), John ‘Mackey’Mc Kenna (0-1), Billy Moloughney, Tom Moloughney (0-1). Subs, Tom Ryan (K) for J. Mc Kenna, John Hough for M. O’Gara (injured) and Sean McLoughlin for Tony Wall (injured).

The Dublin lineout included; Jimmy Grey, Des Ferguson, Noel Drumgoole (Capt), Lar Foley, Liam Ferguson, Christy Hayes, Shay Lynch, Des Foley (0-1), Fran Whelan, Achill Boothman (0-5), Mick Bohan, Larry Shannon (0-3), Bernie Boothman (0-1), Paddy Croke, Willie Jackson (1-2). Sub. E. Malone for M Bohan.

We send best wishes to the Tipperary team on management on Saturday and urge the Tipperary supporters to rally behind the side in huge numbers and give them the support they deserve by rowing in behind them.

The referee will be Alan Kelly.

MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

In what has been an eventful couple of days for a terrific panel of Tipperary minor hurlers we unfortunately have to commiserate with them on eventually losing out to Cork in the Electric Ireland Munster Championship Semi-Final, after two epic encounters saw the Rebel side emerge the victors with only one score between the sides when all was said and done.

First up last Thursday, in Semple Stadium in a match for the ages, both sides remained level after extra time in an exhilarating contest Tipperary 2-18 Cork 1-21 before an attendance of 4,254. This was a game that had everything with Tipp in touching distance of reaching the final at the end of normal time as well as in extra time. However, out on their feet at the end, they had to settle for a draw and make preparations for the return visit to Páirc Uí Rinn on Monday night last for part two of this epic saga. The Tipperary goal scorers on Thursday were Ray McCormack (Borris-Ileigh) and Darragh Woods (Holycross-Ballycahill).

So off south on Monday night the team travelled followed by supporters in their throngs. A packed attendance of 8,142 witnessed another spellbinding encounter where Tipp ran into an early lead only for Cork to peg them back and put clear daylight between the sides. Liam Cahill's side are made of sterner material and coupled with astute substitutions hauled back the deficit to one point in a rip roaring finish. Alas, though it was Cork who secured the final scores winning 2-22 to 2-19 to break Tipp's stranglehold on the Munster Championship and in doing so ended Tipp's 3 in-a-row ambitions with Tipperary's goals coming from Cathal Bourke (Clonoulty-Rossmore) and Kevin McCarthy (Toomevara).

It is a heart-breaking end to the season for this Tipp side as the luck of the draw at semi-final stage means no second chance for them.

We thank all the players and their wonderful management team of Liam Cahill, John Sheedy, Michael Bevans, Sean Corbett, TJ Ryan and their backroom team for the supreme efforts put in this year again. For now though this chapter has come to a close.

SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Best wishes to the Tipperary senior footballers who head to Kingspan Breffni Park to play Cavan this Saturday, July 8th at 2pm in Round 2 B of the Senior Football Championship.

It was in August 18th, 1935 when Tipperary and Cavan last met in the All-Ireland Championship. Both sides had come through to the All-Ireland Semi-Final as provincial winners, Tipp having got there following a 2-8 to 1-2 defeat of Cork in the Munster Final in Fermoy, while Cavan had defeated Fermanagh 2-6 to 2-1 in the Ulster decider.

In the semi-final in Croke Park, Cavan with a last minute score sealed a two point 1-7 to 0-8 victory over Tipp, which incidentally was Tipperary's last appearance in an All-Ireland Football Semi-Final until last year. Cavan later went on to be crowned champions after their defeat of Kildare in the final.

Kingspan Breffni Park will hold happy memories for Tipp from last year as they overcame Derry there on their march to Croke Park. This time round though heading north, Liam Kearns' side will be weakened through injury and will require each player to dig deeper than ever before to ensure they continue in this year's championship.

The referee will be Fergal Kelly

Tickets are on sale in selected SuperValu and Centra Stores and also online at gaa.tickets.ie with prices as follows - Adult: €15.00, Juvenile €5.00 and Student/Senior: Available on the day with valid I.D for €10.00.

This is an unreserved fixture.

SEMPLE STADIUM

This weekend marks a huge profile for Semple Stadium with the hosting of the Munster Hurling Championship Senior and Minor Finals on Sunday as well as the two All-Ireland Hurling Championship Round 2 matches on Saturday evening.

Thanks to the dedicated work of so many; the pitch is in splendid condition and the stadium is looking its best too. The scene is set for a hugely memorable weekend for the 'Field of Legends' and it is on occasions like this that it brings out the best of our Stadium and one the Premier County is rightly proud of.

Best wishes to Stadium Director, David Morgan and his staff, Groundsman Dave Hanley and his assistants and also Event Controller Con Hogan and all the voluntary stewards and personnel over the coming weekend.
