Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 27/04/2015

National Youth Rugby Festival - Galway Corinthians RFC

A strong contingent of Under 15 and Under 16 players left Nenagh on Saturday last to the end of year away trip to wrap up the season.  There were 29 players and 8 parents in all that travelled to Galway Corinthians RFC, home ground for a great weekend of youth rugby.  There were 16 Boy’s teams and 6 Girl’s teams participating in the festival and the weather was spectacular for the event.

The games consisted of 12 minute halves with 1 minute for half time changes.  Nenagh Ormond Under 15’s played Navan, Ennis and Galwegians in the first round and were unlucky not to progress with only a try or two making the difference.  The team played very well and ran the ball wide to make the games very exciting to watch for the spectators.  For an Under 15 team that had not played a season together they did the club proud.  There was very little in the score lines with 1 or 2 scores deciding the victors on the day.  The forwards worked well and held their own and some excellent passing and line work from the team made the day very enjoyable for all.

That evening the team retired to the Maldron Hotel where they settled into their rooms for the night before heading out for some entertainment with Bowling and food.  This was followed by a Festival Disco that went on till late in the night.  All the players were then bussed back to the Hotel to get some sleep for the Sunday games.

On Sunday Nenagh played Suttonians and Corinthians and some great tries were scored.  The main try scorers over the weekend were Eddie O’Dwyer, Evan Murphy and Michael Burke.  Interesting to note that Ennis won the overall Festival and there was very little difference between the teams when Nenagh played them on Saturday.  Definitely food for thought for next year for the Under 15’s.

The Nenagh Ormond Under 16’s also played a friendly against the local Corinthians Under 16 team who were beaten in the Connaught semi-final the weekend before.  They were a very strong team and the Nenagh lads put up a spirited fight, although there were some tired bodies with the weekend and late night taking its toll.

Overall it was a fantastic opportunity for the Nenagh youths to play and meet clubs from Connaught and Leinster and to see the different levels that were in attendance.  The Festival was excellently managed by Galway Corinthians RFC and their hospitality was exceptional.

The Nenagh lads did the club proud and special thanks to the parents and coaches who gave their time to be with the team over the weekend.
