Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Cashel 15-3 Nenagh Ormond

Cashel maintained momentum at the top of Division 2A by beating Tipperary rivals Nenagh Ormond last Friday night.  Sporting Tipperary's blue and gold colours as opposed to the usual red obviously lays down a marker as Tipperary’s top team at present.  Cashel were a more mature team as opposed to Nenagh who had six Under 20's in their panel.

Nenagh were playing their fifth competitive game on the trot and it showed. Cashel were much brighter to start and had Nenagh under pressure from the kick off.  Nenagh initially kept them out with LemekiVaipulu putting in some huge tackles.  Eventually though the pressure told and Cashel were rewarded with a try after 11 minutes when a grubber kick from Aidan Barron was not dealt with by the Nenagh defence and Eamon Connolly touched down.  The conversion was added by Jason Newton.

Nenagh got to better grips with the hosts and a fine penalty from Jack Molamphy got them on the score board. Nenagh remained competitive and had more possession and territory up to halftime but did not add to their tally.

The second half started as had the first but this time Cashel were more direct.  Jason Newtown’s penalty made it 10-3 to the hosts. Nenagh continued to battle hard and went into the final quarter having conceded no more points with both defences performing well.  However, Cashel put the game beyond reach when a try from adriving maul off a lineout from outside the Nenagh 22 allowed Robert Coates to score.

Nenagh supporters would have been fearful of a big beating but in fairness to Nenagh they were much better for the remainder of the game. Indeed they were camped on the Cashel line for the last eight minutes.  Cashel didn't push on but they weren't allowed to by a dogged Nenagh, the only problem being that Nenagh came away with nothing from the game.  While the younger players are playing their part, Nenagh could do with a break on the injuries front with two more league game to face into before a break.

UL Bohemians/Newport 7-32 Under 18s

On Sunday morning Nenagh Ormond Under 18’s finally got their league campaign on track with a comprehensive victory against a spirited UL Bohemians/Newport combination. With a much bigger pack Nenagh dominated the exchanges up front.Nenagh started well and were in front after seven minutes when Darragh Oxley, making his first competitive start for Nenagh, burst through from out-half to score under the posts. Oxley converted his own try to put Nenagh 7 points up.

Within three minutes Oxley had Nenagh 10 points up with a well struck penalty. UL Bohemians/Newport got back into the game with a well worked backline move which allowed their number 13 score easily. The try was converted to leave the score 10-7 in favour of Nenagh.Darragh Oxley scored another penalty after 25 minutes to push Nenagh further ahead. The defining score came on the stroke of half time, when after several phases of play, No. 8 Jack Moloney got in for a well worked try which Oxley again converted to leave Nenagh ahead by 20 points to 7 at the break.

Nenagh controlled much of the game in the second half and were rewarded for their dominance when prop Tom McGrath finished off a fine forwards move to score in the corner half way through the second half.Darragh Oxley missed the difficult conversion.

The score of the match came with five minutes remaining. Fiachra Carey kicked through a delightful ball which the UL Bohemians/Newport full back could not gather. Harry Young was on hand to dispossess him and go over for a great try.  Darragh Oxley converted to bring his personal tally to 17 points and leave the final score 32-7 in favour of Nenagh.

Under 15s 27-29 Newcastle West Estuary

On a big day for NORFC Juvenile Rugby Club where we fielded teams at U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 at the same time, our U15s played their part when entertaining Newcastle West Estuary in the North Munster League.  This was a real ding-dong battle with the teams going at each other score for score for the entire hour, the only difference between the teams at the end being a conversion.

Newcastle West were quick out of the blocks when some sleepy attempts at tackling allowed them to score in the left corner.  The conversion was narrowly missed.  The visitors also got in for a second try a few minutes later which was converted leaving them 12-0 to the good.  Nenagh finally got into the game when some quick passing allowed the opportunity for Luke Connolly to score with the difficult afters into the wind falling short.

One of the highlights of this phase of the game being a superb take on the run in the air by full back Oisin Larkin proving you don’t need tickets to a Rugby World Cup match to see such fantastic skills.  The next score went to Newcastle West which they also converted for a 19-5 lead before the best score of the game involving sweeping passing phases between backs and forwards resulted in Kian O’Kelly getting the final touchdown to leave the score 19-10 at half time.

Nenagh were quick to start in the second half with Jack O’Keefe getting an early score after some strong running by Sean Hayes, Kian O’Kelly and Dylan Murphy.  The difficult conversion was struck excellently by Jack Moran but fell a foot short which was to prove costly later.  Unfortunately the good work was undone immediately from the restart when the Newcastle West right wing excellently fielded the kick-off and ran in a try leaving the score 24-15 in favour of Newcastle West.

However, the Nenagh boys were dominant at this stage and first Kian O’Kelly scored with Jack Moran adding the extras followed by a late Luke Connolly effort with Jack again adding the extras giving Nenagh a deserved lead for the first time of 27-24 with two minutes remaining.  Having dominated the second half, this was a game we should have closed out but unfortunately we turned over the restart and Newcastle West ran wide and scored in the corner with the last play of the game, the missed conversion leaving the final score at Nenagh Ormond 27-29 Newcastle West.  A disappointing end to a cracking game but one the team can take many positives from.

Training continues at 7pm on Tuesday and Friday nights.  New players always welcome.

Team: Oisin Larkin, James Ferris, Sean Hayes, Jack Moran, Kevin Harding, Owen Farrell, Peter Rainsford, EoghanSlevin, Patrick Whelan, Luke Connolly, Lorcan Tuohy-Donnelly, RuanO’Hanluain, Dylan Murphy, Kian O’Kelly, Jack O’Keefe (c).

Under 13s 12-5 St. Mary’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s played their third league game of the season on Sunday morning against St. Mary’s in Tyone. While never reaching the high intensity of our previous league games the lads showed they could dig out a victory when faced by a big, dogged and tough tackling city side.

Chances were limited in the first half with nearly all the rugby being played either side of the half-way line.  On the one occasion the Saints looked likely to score we got bodies underneath the would-be scorer. Coming near half time James Finn had a penalty on our own 22 and looked like he was about to find touch but, spotting the opposition asleep, he tapped and ran finding Niall O’Sullivan who drew his man and found his three quarter line with space. Quick hands from Sonny, DJ and Andrew put Padraig Hassett free and he ran from half-way, beating the cover to get around under the posts and make James Finn's conversion a formality.

The second half saw us camped in their half but we found it very hard to wear them down.  Eventually a break from Sonny Dower was stopped ten yards from the try line but the pack arrived to reset the possession and a terrific driving maul released the ball at just the right moment to scrum half Niall O’Sullivan who sniped over on the blindside for a lovely try at the corner flag.  The difficult conversion went wide.

Nenagh failed to properly deal with the restart which gave St. Mary’s a foothold in our 22 which eventually led to an unconverted try in the corner with five minutes to go. This led to a nervy finish but in fairness the lads regrouped and held firm to claim victory.

Training continues every Wednesday at 7pm in Tyone.  Our panel numbers have swelled to the high 30s and hopefully over the next couple of weeks we will be able to organise game time for everyone.
