Nenagh Ormond Notes

Senior XV Update

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV are through to the second round of the Munster Senior Cup after Kanturk conceded Saturday’s first round match.

This Saturday sees them return to AIL action with a home fixture against Skerries.  After a gruelling and sometimes disappointing start to the League the lads will be looking to get their season back on track so please come out to support them if you can.  Kick off at 2.30pm.

Under 18s 32-7 Old Crescent/St Senan’s

Nenagh continued recent good form in the Pan Munster under 18 Conference with a comprehensive victory against a spirited Old Crescent/St Senans combination on Sunday morning in Tyone.

The conditions in Tyone were perfect despite earlier concerns for the state of the pitch following last week’s inclement weather. The fact that this was the second match played on Sunday shows the resilience of the Tyone pitch.

Old Crescent/St Senans were first to score after five minutes when they turned over the ball inside their own half and spread the ball out wide for their winger to sprint past all the cover to score under the posts. The try was converted to put Old Crescent/St Senans 7-0 in front.

Nenagh came back strongly and despite being under pressure in set pieces scrums and lineout, Nenagh were much more dominant in loose play. Nenagh got their rewards for strong rucking and mauling when Rory McCarthy got in for a try from close out after twelve minutes. Ben Healy converted from a difficult angle to level the scores.

Within five minutes Nenagh were in front when, following good forward pressure, the ball was spread out to out half Ben Healy. Having an overlap outside, Healy was able to dummy and race in from forty metres to score in the corner. He missed the difficult conversion.

Tommy Wells then got in on the act after 19 minutes, when picking from the base of a ruck he powered over from close to the line to get in for a try. Ben Healy again converted from a difficult angle to put Nenagh 19-7 up at half time.

Nenagh continued their forward domination in the second half with two more converted tries. Firstly, eight minutes into the second half, a fine, free-flowing move resulted in Mervyn Hayes offloading brilliantly to allow Rory McCarthy touch down for his second try.  Following the sin-binning of Tommy Wells for being over-zealous in the ruck, Nenagh soaked up some Old Crescent pressure. Once Nenagh were back to fifteen players, they continued their forward domination and finished off the game with their fifth try with four minutes remaining when No. 8 Jack Moloney powered over to finish off a fine forward move which summed up Nenagh’s efforts.

Final score Nenagh Ormond 32 - Old Crescent/St Senans 7

Under 13s 0-29 Shannon

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s played Shannon on Sunday morning in Tyone in a League game. After 10 days of rugby inactivity and a couple of players unavailable through sickness we never got into this game. We never matched Shannon for intensity and when we did have the ball we were only attacking in ones and twos.

Our best attacks came from Adam Clear and Joshua Delaney who both attacked from inside our 22 on a number of occasions but on each attack our support was too slow and possession was turned over.

Shannon opened the scoring midway through the first half with a penalty in front of the posts. Soon afterwards as Shannon laid siege to our line, a great steal by Jack Gleeson looked to have saved the day but a loose clearance kick gave them back the ball and soft tackling allowed them in under the posts. The last play of the half saw them attack the blindside from a scrum and more missed tackles allowed the winger in at the corner flag to leave the visitors up by 15 points to nil at the break.

Nenagh didn't hang their heads and tried very hard in the second half but conceded two more tries. One came from a fumble in mid field and a hack ahead being won by their centre and the second from another wayward clearance kick being run back for a score under the posts.

We travel to Ennis next Saturday for our re fixture league game and know a huge improvement  is needed. Both our teams will play in Ennis and call into Thomond Park to see Munster v Connacht on the way home.

Under 11s

Last Sunday our Under 11's travelled to rugby’s heartland to play Young Munster RFC, affectionately known as the Cookies, in a friendly.  On a lovely crisp autumn morning 15 players made the journey to Tom Clifford Park.

We divided up into two groups and played two matches against the home team.  It took us a while to get to the tempo of the game, having had no rugby for a few weeks.  In the first games we were on the back foot and conceded a few tries but in the second game we really upped our performance and played our best rugby of the year so far.  We started scoring tries, tackling well and generally playing with an intensity that had been missing in the first game.

The dashing Aodhan O'Connor was our top try scorer on the day but all round it was a really good team performance.  We were delighted to welcome two players making their debut for Nenagh Ormond, Conall and Tristan.  Both played super rugby and are serious additions to our squad.  We look forward to seeing them back next week.  The towering Cillian Ryan carried some great ball up the middle as well as getting in for a deserved try.

We thank those parents who made the journey and especially those who replied as to their availability or not.  In NORFC we are committed to ensuring every player gets as much game time as possible and when parents do not reply to our texts it makes it much more difficult to plan our teams.  We ask that every parent replies indicating availability or not.  We really need as many players as possible to travel to our away games, especially as, going forward, we hope to be competitive against the best teams Limerick has to offer.

Our thanks to Young Munster RFC for accommodating us at short notice. Best wishes to Zac Keller who picked up a knock.

Next Sunday we welcome Lansdowne RFC to Nenagh - details will be sent by text during the week.

Mini Blitz

Our Mini Section welcomes Lansdowne and Scarriff to Nenagh Ormond this Sunday, 29th November, for a blitz.  Our Under 7s &Under 12s will play Scarriff while our Under 8s, 9s, 10s & 11s will play Landsdowne.
