Nenagh Ormond 10-17 Naas

Nenagh Ormond Senior XV hosted Naas at New Ormond Park last Saturday in their last AIL game of 2014.  Having impressed in their previous game against Seapoint, Nenagh had moved up into fifth place on the table while Naas came into the game in 13th place.

Naas started the better of the two teams, throwing everything at Nenagh in the first ten minutes.  Nenagh weathered the storm well and got themselves out of trouble and into the Naas half.  Nenagh took the first points when they won a penalty on the left side of the pitch which John Lillis put over the bar.  Nenagh continued to press after this but failed to convert this into points, with small errors letting them down.

Then, against the run of play, Naas gained possession in their own half and a couple of missed tackles from Nenagh allowed them to break into the Nenagh 22.  Although Nenagh got back fast, Naas recycled quickly and their big number 12 broke through the defensive line to touch down.  The try was converted to leave the score at Nenagh 3-7 Naas and it remained the same until half time.

It was some time into the second half before another score came and it was Naas again who got over the try line.  At 3-14, Nenagh were still within touching distance and they put some good phases together to give themselves several chances to score.  Unfortunately, errors again kept them out with several forward passes and knock ons denying them.  Naas then added a penalty to their tally and, with time running out, Nenagh were now chasing a losing bonus point.

The character of this team has never been in question and it was evident again during the final minutes of this match.  Nenagh piled on the pressure with several strong lineout mauls inside the Naas 22 resulting in penalties which they kicked to touch and eventually the referee lost patience and Naas received a yellow card.  Working their way into the centre of the pitch, Nenagh took a scrum from another penalty and drove it over the line for Lemeki Vaipulu to score under the posts.  Dan Fogarty added the extras to leave the final score at Nenagh Ormond 10-17 Naas.

Team: John Lillis, Dan Fogarty, Misi Salave, Mark Doyle, Hugh Moloney, Mike Fogarty, Eoin Gardiner (c), Fergal Brislane, John Healy, Conor Brislane, Kevin Seymour, Kevin O’Flaherty, Michael Slattery, Lemecki Vaipulu, Anthony Kavanagh.  Reps: Kevin O’Gorman, John Coffey, Ger Hermse, Peter O’Connor, Shane Quinlan.

Christmas Wishes

2014 has been an historic year for Nenagh Ormond RFC with highlights both on and off the pitch, the outstanding one of course being our Senior XV’s unbeaten run in Division 2B last season and subsequent promotion.

Off the pitch, this year saw the club host several events, including table quizzes, a Golf Classic and our annual Tag Rugby Festival and, as always, they were very well supported.

We would like to thank the players, coaches, team managers, parents, sponsors, members and supporters and all friends of Nenagh Ormond without whom the club could not survive and we wish you and yours a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

Mini Section

The coaches would like to wish all the players and their families a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year and to thank everyone for their support to-date. We would also like to wish our friend and Community Rugby Officer, Pat Fitzpatrick a speedy recovery from his recent illness.

Training resumes on Sunday Jan. 11th.
