Nenagh Ormond Senior XV 18-20 Garryowen

Nenagh’s  first game of the Munster Senior Cup took place on Saturday last when they were at home to Garryowen.  Although the Limerick team play in Division 1B, recent encounters between the two teams have been close affairs and their last contest, a pre-season friendly at the end of August, ended in a 14-all draw.  However, Nenagh have suffered several injuries in the past few weeks and there were several changes to the starting line-up for this game and so they knew they would need to work hard to have a chance.

Garryowen started on the attack but five minutes into the game Nenagh took possession and worked their way into the opposition half where they won a penalty which Dan Fogarty slotted.  Garryowen responded by regaining possession and winning a kickable penalty of their own.  There was a strong wind throughout the match and their attempt drifted wide.  However, this was the beginning of a sustained period of pressure from the visitors which eventually resulted in a try on 16 minutes and this was followed by a penalty just before the whistle to leave the half time score at Nenagh Ormond 6-10 Garryowen.

The third quarter was a tough one for the Nenagh lads with Garryowen extending their lead.  They scored two tries which resulted from missed tackles and some unlucky handling errors.  Credit to the Nenagh lads, with Garryowen leading by 20 points to 6, they refused to give up and worked hard to get themselves back in the game.  The lineout maul was a source of good go-forward ball in this period and both Lemeki Vaipulu and Anthony Kavanagh carried well.  Indeed, it was Kavanagh who eventually scored after Nenagh patiently worked through the phases to stretch the Garryowen defence.

Kavanagh was again the scorer when Nenagh won a penalty and opted to kick to touch for the lineout.  The result was an excellent driving maul which took the forward pack over the line for Kavanagh to touch down.  Nenagh were now just two points behind and were in the driving seat.  Unfortunately, the final whistle went too early for them and the score remained Nenagh Ormond 18-20 Garryowen.

The lads will be happy with a good second half performance and result against a higher-ranked team.  This was also an opportunity for some of the squad members to get meaningful game.  The Senior XV have this weekend free before returning to AIL action on Saturday Week, November 1st, with a home fixture against U.C.C.

Team: Dan Fogarty, Shane Quinlan, Eathon Moloney, John Long, Ruaidhri O’Brien, Mike Fogarty, Eoin Gardiner (c), Conor Brislane, Peter O’Connor, Fergal Brislane, Kevin Seymour, Andrew Mackey, Michael Slattery, Lemeki Vaipulu, Anthony Kavanagh.  Reps: Aidan Doyle, Kevin O’Gorman, Michael Walsh, Jonathan Hayes.

Nenagh Ormond Ladies 18-3 Shannon

Nenagh Ormond Ladies played Shannon at home last Sunday in their third AIL game of the season.  This was Shannon’s first game as they had a bye in the first round and their second game was postponed so Nenagh put the pressure on straight away.  The Ladies had a dream start, touching down in the first few minutes when simple hands saw Therese Nolan finish well on the wing.

This was followed by a period of Shannon possession in the Nenagh half which saw Nenagh’s scramble defence put to the test.  Shannon did make good ground at times and a couple of missed tackles allowed them make half-breaks but the cover from the Nenagh girls came across each time to deny them.  This, coupled with slippery conditions which affected both teams, saw Shannon come away from this period of the game without a score.

Having soaked up the pressure well, Nenagh regained possession and worked their attack well to take them into Shannon’s half.  The ball came out to centre Adeline Harty who showed her pace with a break that took Nenagh into the Shannon 22.  She passed to Ciara McCullough on the wing and with several Shannon players flying across to cover, Sandra Williams took a clever line inside them and took the pop from McCullough to touch down, leaving the half time score at 10-0.

Shannon were first to score in the second half when Nenagh gave away a kickable penalty for playing the ball on the ground.  This was to be Shannon’s only score of the game.  Again in this half, conditions meant that handling errors were frequent and, apart from a Nenagh penalty, the game was scoreless for some time.  Nenagh did stay on top though and a brilliant break down the touchline from Sandra Williams in the final quarter sealed an 18-3 win.

This second victory keeps Nenagh’s league hopes alive and particular mention must go to Therese Nolan who scored her first try for Nenagh and to Sarah Corcoran and Marie Louise Ryan whose workrate both on and off the ball was excellent throughout the eighty minutes.  The Ladies play Thurles at home in a friendly this Friday night followed by the next round of the AIL on Sunday week when they take on Ballincollig away.

Training continues every Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm at the club in Lisatunny.  New players are always welcome.  Contact Sandra on 087 7916690 for more information.

Mini Blitz

The Mini Blitz which was held in Clanwillam on Sunday morning last saw 92 children from Nenagh all get to play and represent their club.  This doesn't happen by accident and the club would like to sincerely thank all the parents having their children at an away fixture for 10.15 on a Sunday morning.

Under 12’s

The Under 12’s travelled to Clanwillam on Sunday morning for a blitz.  The weather was wonderful but the pitch was much narrower than our players are used to and it stopped us from playing an expansive game.  First up we faced Cashel and a slow hesitant start saw us leak an early try.  This seemed to wake our lads up and for the rest of the game we got stuck in and put in a huge effort but with no room to spread the ball we could not cross for a try.  Final score 1 try to nil.

The second game was against the home team Clanwilliam and we were much more clinical and physical in this game with the forwards giving some very clean ball to our scrum half.  From one of those quick rucks a long pass out to Liam King wide on the left saw him leave a trail of defenders in his wake to score a super try.  Shortly afterwards a pop ball to Darragh Tucker deep in his own half saw him make 25 metres up the middle and, as three defenders tried to haul him down, he offloaded to Andrew Ferris who ran in untouched.  From there to the finish it was tough going up front with both teams giving everything for their teams.  Final score 2 tries to nil.

While this blitz didn't see much open rugby it certainly saw some superb tackling and this will stand to all players both this year and in their future careers.  While unfair to single out any players one must mention Daire Slevin for tackle of the day and John Brislane and Sean Fitzgerald for the sheer number of tackles both made.  Well done to all 20 who togged out and played their part.

Panel: Jack Gleeson, Patrick Fogarty, Daire Slevin, Sean Fitzgerald, George O’Leary, John Brislane, Eoghan Tighe, Darragh Tucker, Paddy Ryan, Tom Kennedy, Sonny Dower, Niall O’Sullivan, Liam King, James Finn, Paul Seymour, Andrew Ferris, DJ McGrath, Evan Rainsford, Liam Cooney and Peter Collins.

Under 11’s

Nenagh Under 11’s had great fun at the blitz against Clanwilliam and Cashel last Sunday, with quite a few boys making their Nenagh debuts on the day.  Despite the rain on the way down, conditions were ideal and the sun shone for the duration of the games.

It was the boys first time playing under the expanded laws with 5 man scrums and lineouts and drop outs to restart the game but they adapted very well against two strong and experienced teams.  There will need to be some work continued in training regarding the tackling which has been the team’s weakness since the start of the season.

Try scorers on the day were Luke Conneally and Joseph Coffey and there were great performances from debutants Joseph and Darragh Kyne, Andrew Whelan, Shane Stanley, Paddy Griffen and Sean Moylan.  More experienced players worked very hard with special mention for the try scorers and Joe Shanahan and the hard working Charlie Cavanagh.

The 18 players that travelled were Joseph Gleeson, Joseph Dooley, Andrew Whelan, Zack Dervan, Shane Stanley, Sean Moylan, Adam Hassett, Darragh Kyne, Joseph Kyne, Sam O’Brien, Sean O’Callaghan, Paddy Griffen, Joe Shanahan, Jack O’Flaherty, Joseph Coffey, Frank Manley, Luke Conneally, Paddy Griffen.

Many thanks to the parents that travelled and gave great support on the day.  Training resumes at 10am in Lisatunny next Sunday, all players born in the year 2004 are welcome to come and try out the sport.  Memberships are due and the coaches will have the forms on Sunday for those still to register for the year.

Under 9’s & 10’s

Our Under 9's and Under 10's enjoyed a great morning of rugby in Clanwilliam RFC last Sunday.  Nearly thirty players turned up and we had two very enjoyable rugby matches against the home side and against a very good Cashel side.  Even after only a few weeks our rugby has improved considerably.

Thankfully, the rain stayed away long enough for us to enjoy our rugby.  We scored lots of tries, tackled well, played some free flowing rugby and our support play was excellent.

Our thanks to Clanwilliam RFC and Cashel RFC for a very sporting contest and lovely refreshments afterwards.  Also our sincere thanks to the many parents and coaches who made the journey to Tipperary town.  Training continues next Sunday at 10am.  New members welcome.

Under 8’s

Nenagh Ormond RFC Under 8’s played some great rugby in the Clanwilliam Blitz on Sunday.  The first game against the hosts was full of free-flowing rugby and Nenagh were able to get the ball to speedy wide men Joe Dwyer and Fionn Higgins to great effect.  Harry O’Brien linked play very effectively from the base.

The second game against a bigger Cashel side was a tighter affair but strong driving and tackling by Mark Manley, Michael Gleeson, Jack Casey, Kevin O’Reilly, Cathal Blake and David Hogan turned the tide in our favour.  Robert Powell, playing in his first game of rugby, turned over some great ball for Nenagh in a storming performance.

Team: Jack Casey, Cathal Blake, Mark Manley, Robert Powell, Joe Dwyer, Michael Gleeson, Kevin O’Reilly, Harry O’Brien, Fionn Higgins, David Hogan.

Under 7’s – Leprechaun Rugby

There was a good turnout for the season's first blitz under Leprechaun Rugby Regulations for our Under 7’s.  Fifteen Under 7 players travelled to Clanwilliam RFC in Tipperary Town on Sunday morning.

The first game was against the home team, Clanwilliam RFC.  For Nenagh Ormond RFC, Paul Kennedy got two scores in each half and Liam Dunne picked up a score in the second half. The final result was a draw.

The Under 7’s then played Cashel RFC.  Lukasz Kudrewicz got two scores in the first half.  In the second half, Evan Comerford and Liam Dunne each ran in two scores with Paul Kenndey getting the final score to make it all level at full time.

Great fun was had by everyone with all fifteen players playing a part.
