Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 21/09/2015

Under 13s who beat Clanwilliam on Sunday

Nenagh Ormond Notes

UBL Division 2A
Senior XV

Best of luck to Nenagh Ormond Senior XV who play their first match of the 2015-2016 Ulster Bank League this Saturday at home to Queens University.  With two matches already played and won, Queens are sitting at the top of the table so Nenagh will need to hit the ground running in order to get off to a good start in Division 2A.  The lads are looking forward to the challenge and we hope that all of our supporters will come out to cheer them on.

Coming out to support on Saturday?  Why not avail of our Match & Meal deal and join us for the pre-match lunch at 1pm.  It’s just €15 including entry to the match and all are welcome to attend.  Contact any committee member or contact us through our website or Facebook page to book your seat!

Under 16 League
Ballina/Killaloe/Scariff v Under 16s

Nenagh Ormond Under16s started their league campaign on Sunday Morning away to Ballina Killaloe/Scariff and came away with a convincing win.  Due to some late injury withdrawals we travelled with a reduced squad of 17.  The match was played in very wet conditions but the boys took to the task well and the handling skills worked on in training showed their effectiveness with very little dropped ball in the early phases.

Nenagh kept Ballina pinned back in their own 22 and after a number of attempts at the Ballina line, Evan Murphy got over for the first try, the conversion narrowly missed by Jack Moran.  With the Nenagh front five of Luke Connolly, Michael Kennedy, Michael Bourke, Stephen Harding and John Spillane well on top in the scrums, the ideal platform was created for the backrow of Orrin Moore, RuanO’Hanluain and Jack O’Keefe.  This dominance led to a number of turnovers and off one of these Evan Murphy got in for a second try with Jack Moran getting the extras for a 12-0 lead.

From the restart, Jack O’Keefe claimed excellently and after a number of phases the Nenagh backline of Nathan Deely-O’Meara, Darragh Flannery, Evan Murphy, Jack Moran, Luke Mooney, Ronan Kelly and Colum Moylan created a number of breaks bringing Nenagh close to the Ballina tryline.  A number of close in pick and goes followed and eventually Luke Connolly powered over for a deserved score.  Again Jack Moran claimed the extras to bring the score to 19-0 after 20 minutes.  Nenagh kept the pressure on and following some great backline play, full back Colum Moylan went over on the left side and Jack again obliged with the extras.

Unfortunately, on the stroke of half time Jack had to retire with a bang to his knee and was replaced by Owen Farrell.  Jack Dunne was introduced to the front row and during the second half the scrum still maintained their dominance.  As the conditions worsened Nenagh were guilty of trying to force some passes with the ball not going to hand.  This gave Ballina some possession and territory.  Ballina were playing much better now and Nenagh were forced on to the backfoot and had to defend their line for many phases.  The first up chop tackling was excellent and some good defensive kicking by Darragh Flannery allowed Nenagh to clear their lines.

Nenagh worked their way back up the field again, an excellent turnover by Luke Mooney one of the highlights, and eventually the pressure told on Ballina with Stephen Harding going over in the right corner from close in.  The difficult conversion into the wind was missed by Evan Murphy.  At the restart Ballina chose to kick to the backs.  The restart was claimed by Evan Murphy who found space down the right hand side and outstripped the Ballina cover running in under the posts for his hat-trick.  Darragh Flannery added the extras to close the scoring at 38 – 0.

Well done to the boys on a very solid performance in the wet conditions and thanks to our hosts Ballina for their hospitality and sportsmanship.

Under 14s 36-10 Portumna

Once again last Sunday weather conditions were not ideal for playing open running rugby yet that was what both sides delivered to their great credit. The visitors were having their first outing this season at this level and were a somewhat off the mark when compared to the narrow defeats we suffered at their hands on two occasions last year. In contrast, this was our third game in as many weeks and we moved much more cohesively as a unit.  We had some great heads-up running rugby from all but none more so than out-half Liam King who tormented Portumna throughout. He was ably assisted by Nenagh’s forwards, Dylan Murphy, David O’Sullivan, Cathal Ryan, Sean Richardson, Danny Wilkinson, James Meagher, Shane Whelan and Jack White. The backs received excellent service from scrum-half Eoin O’Meara and Joe Cooney, Luke Gleeson, Rory Moylan, Jack Deane and James Duff all showed a great appetite for work which was reflected on the scoresheet at the end which showed a 36-10 win for Nenagh.

Our work rate at the breakdown has improved a lot over the past three weeks and our straighter running today along with our superior physicality allowed us to punch holes in the visitor’s defence and gain significant yardage beyond the gain line. This platform saw us run in four tries in the first half.  The first try was scored by Jack Deane who was put through selflessly by Jack White when he could have scored himself. Liam King scored the next try after he jinked his way through the defence to touch down under the posts. He duly added the extras. The third came from a great burst up the left wing by centre Rory Moylan and he dotted down after leaving several tacklers in his wake. Rory got his second before the break and the conversion left the score at 24-5 at the break.

At half-time we introduced all our subs: Jake Clarke came on in the front row and made several important hits along with a couple of great carries. Cian McInerney took over at full-back and covered a lot of ground in helping to keep opposition score to a minimum. But the second-half belonged to Jack Keays. He rounded off his return after illness with two great tries: the first came when he picked from the back of a ruck on the opposition’s 22 and burst through the covering tackles of several defenders; the second followed about two minutes later when Jack was on hand to take a brilliant offload from Liam King and run in under the posts. Liam had just gathered the restart from the previous try inside his own 22 and set off on an incredible run past the entire Portumna defence. He was on their 22 and racing for the line when he was finally brought down but he got the offload away to Jack who showed great awareness to stay on Liam’s shoulder.

Training continues for the present in Lisatunny at 6.30pm on Wednesdays.

Clanwilliam 5-29 Under 13s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s continued their preparations for the start of the league with a friendly in Tipperary Town against Clanwillam. On a wet morning which made handling difficult both teams served up an enjoyable game of rugby. Nenagh had 26 players in attendance and all got game time.

Nenagh coaches will be looking for more aggression in the forwards and straighter running in the backs against Bruff next week. Having said that, when we stuck to our patterns we looked dangerous every time we got the ball to the wing and we scored three great tries out wide from moves deep in our own half.  Padraig Hassett scored two of these tries and the other was a superb first career try for Adam Clear.

Jack Gleeson scored another try after some great pick and go's by the forwards. The fifth and final try was an outstanding individual effort by Tom Kennedy, carrying hard through the middle and bouncing off five would be tacklers around the halfway line before breaking away and beating the cover to score under the posts.  James Finn and Sonny Dower kicked a conversion each.

Next week we play Bruff in Nenagh in the North Munster League. Time to be advised.
