Under 14s who are into the East Munster Cup Final

Nenagh Ormond Notes

Senior XV

Nenagh Ormond Senior Team take on Cashel this Friday night in New Ormond Park.  With the two Tipperary teams in fourth and fifth place on the Division 2A Table, this is sure to be a cracker of a match so don’t miss it!
Kick off at 7.30pm.

U14 East Munster Cup Semi-Final
Clonmel5-24 Under 14s

Clonmel hosted Nenagh on Sunday last in the Under 14 East Munster Cup semi-final.  Despite being beaten narrowly twice by the same opposition since Christmas, Nenagh displayed the greater composure and won comfortably in the end. The benefits of last week’s hard fought win over Clanwilliam stood to Nenagh.

Straight from the kick off Nenagh dominated possession and territory. They generated some quick ball, went through the phases and eventually Hugh Guest powered through the Clonmel defence to score under the posts. Just before halftime Nenagh lost concentration and opened the door for Clonmel who scored a try against the run of play. So, despite playing all the rugby, Nenagh only led by 7-5 at half time.

Great credit is due to all the players for their reaction in the second half as they continued on from where they left off in the first half and constantly attacked Clonmel with the ball in hand. Shane Whelan capped a fine performance when he picked a great line and beat several tackles to score Nenagh’s second try. Hugh Guest added the extras.  Nenagh came again when the backs ran from their own 22, kept the ball alive and James Meagher powered over in the corner for Nenagh’s third try.

Clonmel, to their credit, kept fighting to the end and gained more possession but Nenagh looked very comfortable in defence and never gave their dangerous runners any space. From a turnover, David O Sullivan took off from his own half, broke through several tackles and scored a great try to put the result beyond any doubt.  It finished Clonmel5-24 Nenagh Ormond.

This was a great team performance from 1 to 19. Thanks to Clonmel for their hospitality and sportsmanship. Nenagh play Waterpark in the final, date TBC. Training continues Wednesday night in Tyone at 7PM.

U16 East Munster Cup
Under 16s 26-5Clanwilliam

Nenagh Ormond Under16s continued their East Munster Cup campaign when they entertained Clanwilliam RFC at Lisatunny on Sunday morning.  Both teams arrived here on the back of good first round wins over Dungarvan and Fethard.  On a perfect morning for rugby, the squad of 21 arrived early ready for action and they did not disappoint.  Nenagh were quick out of the blocks and produced 30 minutes of excellent rugby putting in one of our best performances of the season so far.  Our forwards were excellent in the tackle and around the breakdown, turning over Clanwilliam on a number of occasions and their carrying in the loose, linking up with their backs, was outstanding.

This high paced interaction between forwards and backs kept us inside Clanwilliam’s territory for long periods and their try line eventually succumbed to the pressure when Evan Murphy got the touch down for our first try after 10 minutes.  Conor O’Brien, whose kicking and counter attacking along with Eamon Hough was excellent on the day, added the extras for a 7-nil lead.  Our second try arrived shortly after when an excellent turnover on a Clanwilliam scrum by our front row of Mickey Bourke, Jack Dunne and Alex Hayes and some quick thinking by scrum half Darragh Flannery allowed the latter get in for the try wide out on the left.  Conor O’Brien added the difficult conversion for a 14-nil lead.

Shortly before half time came the move of the game, involving backs and forwards starting on the half way line.  The offloading and skilful handling was a joy to watch.  Alex Hayes made some great ground into the 22 and offloaded to Evan Murphy who carried strongly up to the try line and, just when it looked like he would be tackled short of the line, he got another offload away to outhalf Ben Duff who ran an excellent support line to score under the posts.  The easy extras were added for a half time lead of 21-0.

Unfortunately our intensity dropped off in the second half and that coupled with Clanwilliam’s admirable never-say-die attitude meant the second half was a much tighter affair.  Clanwilliam got in for a deserved score of their own, narrowly missing the conversion.  Nenagh brought on their subs and they brought a renewed impetus to the team, helping Nenagh to get back on top again.  Ronan Kelly made some great runs on the wing, proving very elusive to tacklers.

With the game coming to a close a great run and kick into space by Darragh Flannery, now operating at outhalf, was well followed up by the same player forcing Clanwilliam to carry the ball over their own line.  From the resulting scrum, replacement Kian O’Kelly almost got in but when tackled short got the ball away to the supporting Evan Murphy who got over for his second try of the day.  Conor O’Brien missed the difficult conversion and the game finished out with the final score of 26 - 5.

Team: Alex Hayes, Jack Dunne, Michael Bourke, John Spillane, Michael Kennedy, Stephen Harding, Orrin Moore, Evan Murphy, Darragh Flannery, Ben Duff, Eamon Hough, Jack O’Keeffe, Colum Moylan, Eddie O’Dwyer, Conor O’Brien, Luke Connolly, Sam West, RuanO’Hanluain, Nathan Deely-O’Meara, Ronan Kelly, Kian O’Kelly.
