Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 20/04/2015

U20 North Munster Cup

Nenagh Ormond 15-36 Young Munster.

Nenagh Ormond Under 20’s were at home to Young Munster on Saturday last in the semi-final of the North Munster Cup.  This was a brave performance by our young players with Young Munster a much bigger team, in particular in the pack where they had a significant weight advantage.  Indeed, Nenagh got off to a much better start and when Darragh Hassey reacted quickly to gather a loose ball just metres out he went over for the first try of the game.  Nenagh held their own for the remainder of the first quarter and added a penalty to their tally to put them 8-0 up.

Young Munster settled in as the game went on and started to put the pressure on, narrowly missing out on a try when they knocked on just metres from the line.  Nenagh tidied up and Willie Coffey made a searing break down the touch line to take them back into Young Munster’s half.  However, Young Munster regained possession and worked their way back up the pitch.  They won a penalty which they kicked to touch for a five metre line out and they set up an impressive maul.  Nenagh defended well and held them up but they broke off the back and powered over the line, leaving the half time score at Nenagh Ormond 8-7 Young Munster.

Young Munster pressed on in the third quarter, gaining a foothold in Nenagh’s 22 and patiently sucking in the defence before flashing the ball wide for a try in the corner.  Nenagh kept plugging away but a turnover in the Young Munster 22 saw their fullback running the length of the pitch before passing to the centre who would have been in for a certain try if it had not been for the brave Nenagh defence.  Dan Finnerty wrapped him in the tackle and held him up.  Unfortunately, this gave Young Munster a five metre scrum and they made no mistake, clinically breaking down the Nenagh defence to go ahead by 22 points to 8.

It seemed they were out of sight at this point but, all credit to Nenagh, when Young Munster knocked on from the long kick off, they were determined not to leave the 22 without a score.  They were fifteen metres out and John Healy did well to control the ball at the back of a retreating scrum.  With a couple of players outside him, Healy opted to go himself and with a storming run broke through the defence to touch down.  Healy converted his own try to bring Nenagh back to within 7 points.

Unfortunately, Young Munster upped their game after this score and went on to add two more tries to their tally to leave the final score at Nenagh Ormond 15-36 Young Munster.  The Nenagh lads were very disappointed after the game but they showed great character and commitment throughout.  Well done to all the players, coaches and management involved in our Under 20 squad who have worked hard all season.
