Nenagh Ormond RFC Club Notes - 14/09/2015

Under 13s who beat Ballina/Killaloe in a friendly on Sunday

Nenagh Ormond Notes

Senior XV

All Ireland League Rugby is back!  Best of luck to Nenagh Ormond Senior XV who start their 2015-16 AIL campaign this Friday night away to Cashel RFC and will be hoping to get off to a good start in Division 2A.

Abbeyfeale 35-17 Under 15s

Nenagh Ormond Under15s are competing in the North Munster Division for the first time and we travelled to Abbeyfealeon Sunday morning to begin our Under 15 league campaign.  Due to various sporting conflicts we travelled with a reduced squad of 17.  Nenagh were very slow out of the blocks and found ourselves 21-0 down after 15 minutes.  At that stage the team pulled themselves together and for the remaining 45 minutes the crowd were treated to a very entertaining spectacle.

We got our first try after some quick thinking by scrum-half James Ferris which resulted in flying winger Kevin Harding burrowing his way over the try line in the corner.  The difficult conversion into the wind was missed by Jack Moran but we were up and running.  The half time score was 21-5.

In the second half our pack started to make some serious inroads into Abbeyfeale territory.  Some big carries by Luke Connolly, captain Jack O’Keefe, Lorcan Tuohy, Danny O’Connor and RuanO’Hanluain and great support rucking by Dylan Knight, Patrick Whelan, EoghanSlevin and Conor Malone gave quick ball and space for our backs to work with.  After one of these carries the ball was moved quickly through the hands of Owen Farrell, Dylan Murphy Patrick Finn and Jack Moran who broke through on half way to score a great team try.  Jack also kicked the conversion leaving the score at 21-12.

Unfortunately the good work was undone by some below par tackling which allowed Abbeyfeale to run in two breakaway tries under the posts from inside their own 22.  The Nenagh boys kept their heads up and further good forwards work again set up the backs who moved the ball swiftly outside where Conor McMahon got in for a try with wing Peter Rainsford outside ready to provide further support if needed.  Nenagh tried hard in the last five minutes to get in for another score but the clock finally ran out.

Training moves to Tyone on Tuesday and Friday nights from 7:00 to 8:30.  New players are always welcome.

Under 14s v Ballina/Killaloe

Conditions were not ideal in Clarisford Park in Killaloe on Sunday morning as we took to the field in wet conditions which made for a higher proportion of knock-ons from both sides who struggled gamely to deal with the slippery ball. However, both sides stuck manfully to the task as the rain began to fall steadily and they served up a very entertaining game of attacking rugby.

In contrast to last week Nenagh's defence dealt with Killaloe's first two attacks and kept the score at nil all thanks to great work from Jack Deane and Luke Gleeson. Midway through the half we conceded a converted try after sustained pressure. However, after some great carries from Sean Richardson, Jake Clarke and David O'Sullivan we drove over the line with Danny Wilkinson on hand to touchdown for the try which was converted from out near the touch line with a huge kick from out-half Hugh Guest.  Just before half-time we conceded another try which left the scoreline at 12-7 to the home team.

The rain continued to fall steadily throughout the second half and even though the only score was another try to Killaloe, there was little or nothing between both teams who to a man battled hard in difficult conditions. Cathal Ryan played well in the front row in his first match of the season. James Meagher, Jack White and Shane Whelan worked tirelessly in the forwards. The backs had good performances from scrum-half Anthony O'Donovan and our centres Joe Cooney and Liam King put in some great tackles in defence as did our wingers Aaron Ryan and James Duff.

Training continues on Wednesdays at 6.30pm in preparation for our first league fixture on Oct 4th.

Ballina/Killaloe 12-24 Under 13’s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13’s played their first match of the season away to Ballina/Killaloe in Clarisford Park on Sunday. This was a nice warm up in preparation for the first league game in two weeks’ time. Both teams adapted very well to the extra space now available to them on a full size pitch and tried to move the ball wide at every opportunity.

Special mention this week to four boys playing their first games of rugby, Padraig Hassett, Adam Steed, Sean Willams and Adam Clear.  All four can be very proud of their performances and will have bright futures.

The final score was 24-12 to Nenagh with tries from James Finn, DJ McGrath, Padraig Hassett and Andrew Ferris.  James Finn also kicked two conversions. Training continues every Wednesday at 7pm.
