Nenagh Ormond Notes

Munster Senior Challenge Cup
Cork Constitution 30-22 Nenagh Ormond

On Saturday last, Nenagh Ormond Senior Team travelled to Cork Constitution for the Semi-Final of the Munster Senior Cup.  Cork Constitution are the current holders of the Cup and compete in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League so Nenagh knew this would be a tough match but they were up for the challenge and went into the match determined to continue the good form which has seen them storm up the Division 2A Table in recent months.

Con were first to score, slotting a penalty kick early in the game and adding a try ten minutes later to go ahead by eight points.  Nenagh stuck to their task and worked hard in the second quarter and their efforts were rewarded when, after several penalties and an excellent scrum which took them over the try line, the referee awarded a penalty try inside the final ten minutes.  KolioHifo converted to put Nenagh within a point.  Despite another Con penalty which left the half time score at 11-7 in favour of the hosts, Nenagh went into the break happy with their performance and confident that they could catch up in the second half.

However, Con pushed on in the third quarter with a penalty and then a try which put them ahead by 21 points to 7 and it looked like they might run away with this game.  Nenagh had other ideas though and they struck back through a LemekiVaipulu try, again converted by Hifo, which narrowed the gap to seven points.  After another Con penalty, a try for Nenagh’s Peter O’Connor brought the score to 24-19 and Nenagh were within touching distance.

The sides swapped further penalties and Nenagh kept the pressure on but the final score went to the home team with a penalty which stretched their lead to 8 points and left the final score at Cork Constitution 30-22 Nenagh Ormond.  This was a fantastic performance from Nenagh against a higher ranked team and showed that they can put it up to the best teams in the country on their day.

A well-deserved break this weekend is followed by a return to AIL action against Cashel on Friday week.

Team:EathonMoloney, David Corcoran, Derek Corcoran, William O’Connor, Ruaidhri O’Brien, KolioHifo, Mike Fogarty, Conor Brislane, John Healy, Jonathan Hayes, Kevin O’Gorman, Kevin O’Flaherty, Michael Slattery, Anthony Kavanagh, LemekiVaipulu.  Reps: Peter O’Connor, Fergal Brislane, Thomas McNamara, John O’Flaherty, Peter O’Leary, Michael Walsh.

Dungarvan5–22 Under 16s

Nenagh Ormond Under16s got their East Munster U16 Cup campaign off to a winning start when they travelled to Dungarvan on Sunday morning last.  The boys kicked off with the breeze at their backs and dominated territory for the early stages.  Dungarvan gifted Nenagh a score early on when a stray pass went to ground allowing Eamon Hough pick up and run in under the posts unopposed.  Conor O’Brien added the easy conversion with his only successful kick of the day.

Shortly after that, a slick backline move allowed Eamon to show his searing pace and get in for a second try out on the left wing.  At this stage Dungarvan finally got into the game and Nenagh had to defend for a period which they did resolutely.  Having weathered this period Nenagh again got on top and a nice move off the back of a scrum gave Nathan Deely-O’Meara the space to get over for Nenagh’s third try.  The teams retired at half time with the score standing at 17-0.

Dungarvan started the second half strongly with the wind at their backs and again Nenagh held their line intact with some terrific tackling.  Nenagh then went back on the attack and Stephen Harding was unlucky not to score, coming up a foot short.  Shortly after some further slick handling by the backs gave Evan Murphy the space to break a couple of tackles and reach long to dot down on the try line.

Dungarvan came back strongly and a superb last ditch tackle into touch two metres out by Kian O’Kelly saved a certain try.  However, Dungarvan were not to be denied and with two minutes left on the clock got in for a deserved score of their own.  From the kick off Nenagh won possession and a fantastic backs and forwards move allowed Darragh Flannery, excellent throughout, to put Colum Moylan into space and he was tackled just short of the line knocking the ball on in the process.  The referee blew the final whistle with the score finishing 22-5 in favour of Nenagh.

Team: Alex Hayes, Jack Dunne, Michael Bourke, John Spillane, Michael Kennedy, Stephen Harding, Orrin Moore, Evan Murphy, Nathan Deely-O’Meara, Darragh Flannery, Eamon Hough, Jack O’Keefe, Colum Moylan, Eddie O’Dwyer, Conor O’Brien, Sam West, Ronan Kelly, Kian O’Kelly.

Under 14s 20–12Clanwilliam

Nenagh hosted Clanwilliam in the final pool match of the Under 14 Cup in Lisatunny on Sunday. This was a must win match for both teams but it was all Clanwilliam for the majority of the first half. Nenagh failed to deal with the kick off and that set the tone for the half. Clan never let Nenagh settle, dominated at the breakdown, delivered quick ball and moved the ball wide where their backline had Nenagh in all sorts of trouble. What little ball Nenagh won they coughed up in the tackle with ball carriers getting isolated.

Against the run of play James Meagher made a great burst for the line but knocked the ball on trying to apply downward pressure.  Nenagh stopped and waited for the scrum but Clanwilliam showed quickness of mind to play on and run the length of the field, only for a last ditch tackle to deny them. After several rucks Nenagh’s defence got caught too narrow and Clan moved the ball wide to score under the posts. Nenagh regained possession from the restart and managed to go through a few phases with Liam King scoring under the posts. Clan got in for a second try to take a deserved 12 – 5 half time lead.

For Nenagh, trailing at half time having been outfought and outsmarted by the same opponents whom they beat 48-14 in the league back in October, the writing was on the wall.  But this team has character. Jack White led by example, caught the kick off and charged into the Clan 22. The forwards warmed to the task, won more possession and started to dominate the opposition. Dylan Murphy broke from a scrum and fed to Liam King who ran a great support line to score his second try but Nenagh still trailed 12-10.

Following some great interplay between backs and forwards, Dylan Murphy scored in the corner to make it 15 – 12. With the match in the balance Nenagh upped the work rate both in defence and attack and Clan never looked like scoring again.  Nenagh went for the jugular with James Meagher scoring a deserved try following some great work from the backs. Nenagh comfortably closed out the game and the final score was 20 – 12.

Great credit is due to all the players for pulling this victory out of the bag, this was a memorable win. Thanks to all the parents who helped out with the refreshments. Nenagh will be away to either Fethard or Clonmel next Sunday in the semi-final. Training continues Wednesday night in Tyone at 7PM.

U13 Conference Semi-Final
Under 13’s 22–0 Old Crescent

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s welcomed Old Crescent to Lisatunnyon Sunday morning for the semi-final of the Conference. In wonderful conditions for rugby we were all treated to a great match with the scoreline in no way telling the true story of this game.  Nenagh had already lost to Crescent in the League stages and this was our chance for revenge.

Nenagh showed a huge appetite for work straight from the kick off with everyone of our players getting stuck into their opposite numbers both in attack and defence. This set the tone for the whole game and it was just as well because, if given space, Crescent had some lovely runners who were capable of doing damage from deep.  James Finn scored two very well taken tries in either corner in the first half with both PadraicHassett and Sonny Dower saving certain tries with last ditch tackles to leave the half time score at 10-0.

The start of the second half saw us have some scary moments on our own line but we eventually lifted the siege and the introduction of Josh Delaney swung the game back in our favour. Josh made a couple of great carries in open field which created room out wide and PadraicHassett finished two of these for great team scores.  James converted one of these tries to bring the score to 22-0.

The subs came on and all played their part and it was great to see the pride in the jersey coming to the fore and the players demanding of one another to keep our try line intact. This performance came about not only from the physical training that has been ongoing all season but also the mental preparation that we've asked the players to adhere too.

Under 13 Conference Final will take place on Easter Monday at a Limerick venue TBC.
