Nenagh Ormond Notes

Discussion Forum at NORFC

A sincere thank you to everyone who attended our discussion forum at the club last Friday night.  It was a very positive meeting where lots of new ideas were forthcoming and we hope you will continue to give your input throughout the season.

Garryowen Cup
Nenagh Seconds 30-7 Galbally

Nenagh Ormond Seconds hosted Galbally at New Ormond Park on Sunday afternoon in the Garryowen Cup.  Although Nenagh looked strong in the opening minutes of the match, gaining a foothold in the Galbally 22 after a break by Ger O’Gorman, Galbally regained possession from a Nenagh lineout and had much of the possession in the first quarter.  Eventually, they won a penalty which they kicked to touch for a 5 metre lineout and they managed to get a strong runner over the try line soon after.  The try was converted to leave Nenagh trailing by 7 points.

However, Nenagh came more and more into the game and started to put some phases together.  Good carries from the pack, in particular Kevin O’Gorman and Kevin O’Flaherty, took Nenagh into Galbally territory and when Peter O’Leary passed to DarraghHassey on the short side, Hassey spotted a gap in the defence which he ghosted through before offloading to EathonMoloney coming at pace.  Moloney raced over the line and touched down just outside the posts.  Michael Walsh added the conversion to even up the score.  Nenagh kept up the pressure and Walsh added a penalty just before half time to put Nenagh ahead 10-7.

Galbally started the second half with renewed energy, holding onto the ball and making their way into Nenagh’s half.  After a sustained period of pressure, Nenagh gave away a kickable penalty which Galbally failed to convert.  Nenagh then piled on the pressure down at Galbally’s end and were rewarded when Kevin O’Gorman stormed off the back of the scrum, drew defenders and passed the ball out.  It reached EathonMoloney at outside centre who powered through several defenders for his second try.  Walsh again converted to leave the score at 17-7.

Nenagh seemed to get stronger and stronger with Michael Walsh adding another penalty soon after.  In the final quarter, Nenagh scored two more excellent tries.  Ger O’Gorman broke up the touch line and passed inside to EathonMoloney who got into the Galbally 22.  John Healy straightened up the attack before the ball went out to Kevin O’Flaherty who expertly flicked it on to John Long.  Long was tackled but managed to pop the ball up to John Hayes who offloaded just short of the line to Cian Comerford for Nenagh’s third try.

The final try came when Moloney again got around the defence.  Heput a kick ahead just before going into touch which bounced up for the chasing Michael Walsh to touch down, adding a try to his tally for the day.  This was an excellent start to the season for our Seconds who play the next round of the Garryowen Cup at home at 2.30pm this Sunday.

Under 14s

Our first game of the 2015-16 season took place in ideal conditions at Lisatunny on Sunday morning.  Our opposition was Ballina/Killaloe and they were much faster out of the blocks as they ran in three tries in quick succession before we settled to the task at hand. In the lead up to half-time our increased work rate and teamwork began to apply some serious pressure on Killaloe’s defensive line. After a great carry by Dylan Murphy we were held up short of the line, but James Meagher was first to pounce and score.

Shortly after as half-time approached we again gained a foothold in opposition territory near their twenty-two. Most of the team was involved in putting the ball through the hands from the base of a ruck and after the overlap was created Liam King was able to use his pace to get in around the defence and score a great team try to leave the half-time score at 10-17.

The second half saw a much better performance from our lads and though we conceded three more tries we also scored three of our own through Dylan Murphy (2) and Rory Moylan.  Despite being camped in Killaloe’s 22 we couldn’t close the gap any further but we can take a lot of positives from the match ahead of next week’s return fixture in Clarisford Park as well as for the season ahead.

A special mention for Jack Keyes who was playing his first ever rugby match (at no. 6): Watch out Peter O'Mahony! Training continues on Wednesdays at 6.30pm.
