Nenagh Ormond Notes

Under 13s

Nenagh Ormond Under 13s played UL Bohemian on Sunday morning in Tyone in a friendly.  On a wet, cold day both teams got stuck into each other from the start and, while it wasn't a day for skilful handling, our lads showed a great appetite for hard work and some of our rucking and tackling were of the highest quality.

UL Bohs are a really good side and are unbeaten this season but we showed we can compete at this level if we get our application right.  UL Bohs scored two first half tries to our one from PadraicHassett. The visitors added three more in the second half but we never gave up.

This was a good work out ahead of a League semi-final next week in the conference. The performance was a big step up from last week's effort and hopefully we can continue this improvement next week.

NORFC Under 11’s
Trip to Thomond Park

Last Saturday our Under 11’s travelled in force to Thomond Park to watch Munster take on Newport Gwent Dragons.  We departed in convoy from Lisatunny at 6pm and parked in LIT.  We then made the short trip across to the East Terrace of Thomond Park.  There were nearly 30 children and 10 adults including coaches.

On a night where Munster crashed home 4 tries, winning 29-5, we had a really memorable and enjoyable evening of rugby.  Despite the cold, everyone was in high spirits and there was a great atmosphere in the Stadium.  This was a great team building exercise, and all our young players had a great night.  All were very well behaved and spirits were high, though we had to ‘sinbin’ one or two where the excitement was getting the better of them!

Highlight of the night was when the ball came in from play and the Nenagh boys displayed remarkable scrummaging skills, trying to rip it from the arms of the mighty Cormac Sullivan who was quickest to react and gather the ball.  Our coach Fergal, who had a good day himself in Queens, would have been proud of the way Cormac held the ball and stayed on his feet!

We arrived back to Lisatunny at 10.15pm and given the late hour it was decided to take the following morning off.  Our thanks to Denis O'Meara who arranged the tickets, to all the parents who gave a lift to the kids and generally helped out, and a special mention to all the Mothers on Mother’s day to thank them for their support (and patience especially on mucky days!!) during the year.

Training resumes atLisatunny next Sunday at 10AM.

Mini Blitz
Under 12s

NORFCUnder12’s travelled to Thurles on Sunday for a blitz.  Unusually the home team had no Under 12 side, so we played a match of four quarters against Kilfeacle. Conditions were bright and cold at the start, but a sleety rain arrived shortly after half time which made for difficult conditions in the second half.

This was Nenagh’s best performance of the season against a strong Kilfeacle side.  All Kilfeacle’s tries were from break aways from their own half when Nenagh were attacking, including two intercepts. However, Nenagh showed great continuity at times keeping the ball for 5 or 6 phases, with rucking much improved from recent matches.

There was some great tackling from DarraghKyne, Joseph Gleeson, Sam O’Brien and Joe Shanahan during the game and the tackling this week was much improved.  Some players are still going too high in the tackle and this is something that we will continue to work on between now and the end of the season.

Paddy Griffen, MateliHermange and Conor Tierney made some excellent runs and got great support from Leo Bane, who had his best game to date in the red and white jersey. The switch of Sean Moylan to scrum half worked a treat and he combined very well with outhalf Joseph Gleeson and this could be a pairing to watch in the future. Sean was quick to the breakdowns and gave a great service to Joseph and there was good handling and passing at times from Eoin Ward, Jack O’Flaherty and Joe Kyne.

Nenagh scored two tries, one from DarraghKyne and the second from Jack O’Flaherty (with a bit of assistance from the referee!). The Kilfeacle referee, Chris, gave an top class performance and was the best referee we have had this season, which made for an entertaining game and allowed both teams to play positive rugby.

Training continues next Sunday at the earlier time of 10am to coincide with the return of the younger age groups from Ballymackey. Please talk to the coaches if you have not paid your membership or can take a line for the juvenile draw.

Team: Joseph Shanahan, Frank Manly, Paddy Griffen, Leo Bane, Sam O’Brien, Conor Tierney, Sean Moylan, Joseph Gleeson, DarraghKyne, Joe Kyne, Eoin Ward, Jack O’Flaherty, MatleiHermange

Under 9s

Nenagh Ormond Under 9’s played in the Thurles Blitz on Sunday last.21 players travelled in all. The home side did not field a team at this level, so we played two good games against fellow visitors, Kilfeakle.

Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worst, but thanks to all who travelled and played. Best for Nenagh on the day were Jack Casey and Ryan Gratton.

Under 8s

NORFC Under 8's travelled to Thurles on Sunday last.  A 21-strong panel turned up on what started as a lovely Spring morning. However, as conditions turned wet, the games got under way.

The team was divided into two and we played a 9-strong Thurles team and a 14-strong Kilfeakle side. Both teams were extremely tough, with mauling generally dominating the game in muddy conditions. Out of the four games played Nenagh won two, drew one and lost one.

Training will resume to Lisatunny on Sunday next at 10am.

Under 7s

Nenagh Ormond Under 7s played Thurles,Kilfeakle and a combined Thurles/Kilfeakle team.  Charlie Cairns and Thomas Duffy both made great runs into space and got over the try line a few times. All players put in a good performance with all matches ending in a draw.

Eventhough the rain fell in the last five minutes of their match the players, along with their coaches, had a fun morning of leprechaun rugby in Thurles.

U7 Panel: Charlie Talbot, Charlie Cairns, Gerard O'Looney, Thomas Duffy, Conor O'Brien, Senan O'Farrell, Scot Powell.
