Big time soccer beckons for Nenagh A F C ladies soccer team

Big time soccer beckons for the Nenagh A F C ladies soccer team with promotion already secured to the all Tipperary premier ladies league for next season, they now play a must win game at Brickfields on Wednesday evening at 7.30 against old rivals Borris St Kevin’s and a win would secure a Championship decider play off game against Tipperary town ladies. The team has made huge progress under the guidance of Aishling Meagher and Paul Hearty both of whom have put huge work into keeping ladies soccer afloat at Nenagh A F C. Their hard work is paying off this year and with a great blend of youth and returning experienced players they have got the mixture right.

Last Saturday evening at the beautifully manicured Peake Villa ground in beautiful weather Nenagh A F C ladies took on an experienced Sallypark Odhrans side in the plate final . Nenagh A F C lined out without the injured Gilly McKenna and the unavailable Shauna Rooney but yet Nenagh  could field a side confident of success showing the dept of their squad.  Nenagh started off the brighter side with winger Sophie Kelly causing all sorts of problems to Sallypark with her pace and skill but we failed to create a scoring chance . Sallypark then dominated for the next 10 minutes winning 5 corners in a  row but great defending by Nenagh added  to fantastic goalkeeping by Christine Coffey kept Sallypark at bay. Christine Coffey’s return to Nenagh has been a huge bonus for the team as she adds courage and experience not only playing as a Goalkeeper but also playing as a sweeper when needed . Nenagh dominated the next quarter and Sophie Kelly tested the Sallypark keeper just before Nenagh were awarded their first penalty of the day. Mel Molly stepped up to take it only to be denied superbly by the Sallypark goalkeeper . A few moments later Mel Molly hit the crossbar from 20 yards and it looked like one of those days for Nenagh as the first half ended scoreless.

Nenagh moved Alanna Morris to the centre of Mid Field for the second half with the youthful Leann Ryan replacing her at centre half and it was to prove an inspirational move as Nenagh now found the ascendency in midfield . This paid off early as Alanna Morris took a pass in the middle of the field drove through the Sallypark defence beating several players before scoring off the goalkeeper to open the scoring for Nenagh . Minutes later Mel Molloy made it 2.0 with a fine run and shot from distance . Sallypark we’re now rocked and Nenagh soon made it 3.0 when player of the match Sophie Kelly scored the goal she so richly deserved  when she cut in from the right and unleashed an unstoppable shot to the net . Moments later the game was put beyond Sallyparks reach when Mel Molly was taken down for a penalty and she made no mistake this time sending an unstoppable shot into the to the net . The Sallypark keeper then stopped a shot from Lorna Shoer as Nenagh pressed for more and Katie Costello went close with a header from a corner. The game ended with a 4 .0 win for Nenagh.  Team: C Coffey, E Kenneally, A Morris, A Ryan, R Kenneally, G Cummins, L Maher (Capt) L Ryan, S Kelly, M Molloy, L Shoer, H Tucker, Y Deegan, K Costello.

This was a great team effort from Nenagh with the Kenneally cousins playing well at fullback, and Aoife Ryan and Alanna Morris patrolling centre back, Captain Linda Maher controlled the centre of midfield with Leann Ryan with Grace Cummins and Sophie Kelly tormenting the Sallypark flanks Mel Molloy and Lorna Shoer used their skill to devastating effect. Nenagh used their subs well with Yvonne Deegan, Hanna Tucker and Katie Costello  adding to the team when called on.

The club would like to wish Gilly McKenna and Grace Cummins a speedy recovery from their injuries, congratulate Yvonne Deegan on her recent engagement, wish those doing college exams the best of luck and wish terrible twins Gilly Mckenna and Alanna Morris happy 21sts.

The club would like to remind everyone about the must win game against Borrisokane St Kevin’s at Brickfields at 7.30 on Wednesday evening they could do with huge support for their endeavours

Yours sincerely Séamie Morris 07/08/17. 0872859125
