‘The work of angels’: Illustrated talk on The Book of Kells
The Book of Kells is regarded as one Ireland’s most important treasures and perhaps Europe’s most important illuminated manuscripts in the insular style. Gerald of Wales, travelling in Ireland in the 12th. Century, described it as ”not the work of man, but of angels”. This illustrated talk will look at the history of the Book of Kells, how it was made and the technique and possible meanings of the decoration.
