Polocrosse National Finals 2013

The 2013 Polocrosse National Finals will take place at Nenagh Showgrounds on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September.

Often described as ‘hurling on horseback’, polocrosse is the most fun equestrian team sport in Ireland. The National Finals are the highlight of the season, where teams from all over the country compete for the title of National Champions.

Polocrosse is a combination of polo and lacrosse, played on horseback on a pitch with a rubber ball and polocrosse racquet. A team sport, the objective of the game is to score into the opponent’s goal. A team consists of 6 players, divided into two sections of 3 who play three alternate games/chukkas of 6 minutes each. The three players are attack, midfield and defense.

The sport originated in Australia and is now played internationally. It is a family oriented sport that encourages enjoyment and sportsmanship. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to play and it also helps improve riding skills. Polocrosse is a recognised horse sport by both the Pony Club and Horse Sport Ireland.

Anyone with an interest in horses or team sports will be guaranteed a weekend of fun and excitement and they might even be tempted to ‘give it a go’! Matches kick off both days at 9am running till 5pm. Food and refreshments are available on site and entry and parking are free. There will also be a Bar-B-Q and Pig-on-a-spit on the Saturday night starting at 7pm. Tickets for the Bar-B-Q will cost €10. This will be an enjoyable and social week-end where visitors interested in learning more about Polocrosse will be made feel very welcome.

If you are interested in more information on this event and Polocrosse, please contact Birr Polocrosse Club Chairman Tadhg O’Leary at 086 2400888.
