North Tipp to play in Galway Cup

The Galway Cup kicks off next Wednesday morning, and the North Tipp League will play in the 2002 Elite and 2002 Boys section. It has become an outstanding tournament, with four pitches, side by side, in action for ten hours each day. Check out all the details at http://www.salthilldevon.ie/macron-galway-cup-fixtures/

Northern Ireland and Leeds United lead the charge in the 2002 Elite section. Over the past ten years some pretty heavy hitters have starred in this tournament. The player who has probably achieved the most is Conor Wickham. Now with Sunderland he starred in the cup with Ipswich Town. Another Premiership player is Luke Garbutt who has just signed a four deal with Everton - he is a product of the Leeds United academy and played with them in the macron.

Looking at Irish players; Greg Cunningham, now with Bristol City and Joe Shaughnessy, now with St Johnston, Stevie Folan, now with Cork City and most recently Ryan Manning, now with QPR have set the tournament on fire.

The home club, Salthill Devon, are justifiably proud of how well their ‘old boy’s have done and some of those now playing their trade in the League of Ireland, who starred in the Galway Cup are Daryl Horgan, Dundalk, his brother Colm, Galway United and his team mate Ger Hanley. Paul McMullan, Celtic, currently on loan at St Mirren was very impressive with The Celts at the tournament as was the flamboyant Sanchez Payne of Leeds, now with Stockport, but still very young.

However there is perhaps one name that we should scribble into the notebooks for another day - Brahim Abdelkader Díaz; who you might ask? Well he starred for Malaga in 2012 and Manchester City signed him in 2013 for a reported £300k, rising to £2.4m. Remember the name - he just might be the next Messi.

“it’s all systems go from now until the first ball is kicked” said Tournament Director Ronan Gibney, as the countdown begins to another great tournament. Who will be this year’s star?
